Weston Stepchildren Of Rock CD

Doc Hopper provides the flip of a more melodic pop-punk styling that's accompanied by the occasional metal guitar backings. With the vocals not being as gruff as their studio work, the sloppy tendencies are one of the only similarities that's captured in their live act. Again, the previously released material is recycled live, making this entire record look more like a contract obligation to Go Kart. It's almost worth it to hear Weston acting like goofballs. But other than that, this is for die-hard fans of either band. ~ Mike DaRonco

Live albums are practically worthless unless they contain unreleased live material or if said band adds a completely different spin on their "hits" -- which can sometimes backfire as with the Who and their 18-minute rendition of "My Generation" on Live at Leeds. Back before they turned into a bad Pixies knockoff, Weston not only provided the catchiest, wimp punk this side of the Descendants, they were also one of the most entertaining live bands ever to grace a basement show. Stepchildren of Rock almost captures the in-person experience as the harmonies and all-around silliness are present -- the later of which is backed up by a brief rendition of the Suicidal Tendencies classic "Institutionalized."
