| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Amada Querida CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records ...
| | Dhol Foundation Big Drum Small World CD (2001)
Amada Querida music CDs
$11.99 The dhol is a large hand-held drum that's deep, ringing tone is a key component of bhangra, a traditional Punjabi folk music that has itself grown and mutated into one of the key elements of London's Asian underground dance music scene. You hear the dhol thundering and rippling beneath singles by such eminent Asian underground artists as Talvin Singh, Joi, and the Asian Dub Foundation, and also in the music of the Afro Celt Sound System, whose drummer moonlights as a master teacher of the dhol and runs a school called the Dhol Foundation. Recording here for the first time under that moniker, Johnny Kalsi delivers a fascinating and funky program of modern dance music that draws heavily on bhangra and other Indian influences while at the same time keeping the ambience pleasant and dreamy. Occasionally things get just a little bit too pleasant and a little too dreamy, and the music teeters dangerously on the edge of soporific new age-ism. But that happens rarely, and just when you think you're going to fall asleep -- during the first two and a half minutes of "Iridian," for example -- Kalsi snaps you back to attention with a funky breakbeat or a bracing splash of frantic drum'n'bass. If you're an Asian Dub Foundation fan, you might find Big Drum: Small World a bit on the tame side; but if you love Afro Celt Sound System and Joi, this album will stay in your CD player for days. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Jean Shepherd & Other Foibles CD (1959)
Amada Querida songs
$11.79 Originally released in 1959, and like his other record for Elektra Will Failure Spoil Jean Shepherd?, and indeed like Shep's late-night radio shows, this album is an intimate interlude spent with one of the greatest storytellers of all time, sort of radio's version of Mark Twain spinning yarns in his own unique, leisurely fashion.
Excelsior! Jean Shepherd lives! This disc contains Shepherd's luminous lampooning and ageless storytelling on his second long-player (and first for Elektra Records), Jean Shepherd and Other Foibles (1959). He brings the same completely unique mix of understated beatnik madness and tongue-in-cheek political and social satire to this studio recording, which became a trademark of his two-plus decades on the air at WOR in New York City (aside: Shepherd actually and somewhat fittingly broadcast from the station's transmitter site in Carteret, NJ). Those not hailing from the Big Apple may have read one of his books or various contributions to Playboy in the early '60s. Shepherd was also the unseen adult voice of the central character Ralph Parker in the 1983 film A Christmas Story. The 11 tracks included on this disc reveal a true blend of unassuming rapier wit wrapped up in the guise and Walter Mitty-esque outlook inherent in every red-blooded American. His tales depict both the surrealistic nature of the modern a-go-go world as well as those life experiences which tether everyone to the very essence of humanity. Cuts such as "Judson-6" -- dealing with the "debauch" anticipation of dialing a randomly discovered phone number just for kicks -- as well as the ultimate send-off ...
| | Cannibal Corpse Wretched Spawn CD (2004) With DVD; Edited
Amada Querida album
$9.69 For album number nine, Wretched Spawn, Cannibal Corpse continue on with much the same style of gore-themed death metal that had made them a mainstay of the stateside scene for a decade-and-a-half. Bassist Alex Webster and guitarist Jack Owen write most of the songs here, respectively, and those songs are pretty much what you've come to expect from Cannibal Corpse by this point -- musically pulverizing and lyrically unsettling. Vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher is as unrelenting as usual, especially on such songs as "Frantic Disembowelment," where he switches from growling to screaming with seeming ease. Wretched Spawn is overall a pretty brief album, clocking in just under 45 minutes, as few of the 13 songs break the four-minute mark. The title track is an exception, as are the lumbering "Festering in the Crypt" and the thrashing album-closer, "They Deserve to Die" -- these three longer songs being some of the more interesting ones here, given their unique characteristics. Most of the others are rather straight-ahead death metal blasts, and while they're on the mark stylistically, they may seem a bit workmanlike to longtime fans who have heard all this before. And that's perhaps the one lurking problem with Wretched Spawn -- it sounds great and is everything you'd expect it to be, but it's nothing new for this veteran band, who long ago perfected their death metal attack. If you're perfectly fine with the status quo, or are perhaps new to Cannibal Corpse, you'll surely find much delight here; however, if you're looking for ...
