| | Bob Graf At Westminster CD Bob Graf Discography of CDs
Bob Graf was a fine soft-toned tenor-saxophonist who never gained much fame nor made many recordings. For this live set from St. Louis, he is joined by fellow tenor Ron Ruff, pianist Jimmy Williams, bassist Bob Maisel and drummer Al St. James. The obscure cast plays well on the original "Funky Ride" and four jazz standards. Little unusual happens, just some solid swinging and spirited improvising in the cool bop vein. ~ Scott Yanow

At Westminster album
$12.05 After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on ...

| | Frank Sinatra Nothing But The Best CD (2008) Remastered
At Westminster music CDs
$15.65 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will likely own most of this material, yet as a greatest hits set (albeit covering the Reprise years only) NOTHING BUT THE BEST lives up to its title.

| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
At Westminster songs
$15.29 Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. ...

| | Michael Hedges Aerial Boundaries CD (1985)
At Westminster CD music
$7.59 Michael Hedges is considered by many one of the most important innovators of the acoustic guitar. His total dedication to the acoustic guitar enabled him to develop a new approach to the instrument that transcended anything done before. He could sound like two--at times even three--guitarists playing at once, and his compositions drew on a wide variety of influences, from the earthy to the academic. While he is usually associated with the new age movement that flourished in the '80s and early '90s (having recorded on the flagship Windham Hill label), the reach of his music extends far beyond the drivel that the tag suggests.
AERIAL BOUNDARIES incorporates all the elements that characterize Hedges' music: astounding technique, innovative composition, and a spirit of exploration. ...

At Westminster songs
$17.49 Violinist Joe Venuti's three recordings with tenorman Zoot Sims are all quite joyful and exciting. This Chiaroscuro recording matches the pair with pianist John Bunch, bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Bobby Rosengarden and, on "Don't Take Your Love from Me," trombonist Spiegel Willcox who was then 73. The small-group swing performances have plenty of life and more often than not are hard-swinging. ...

| | Rickard Javerling Two Times Five Lullaby CD (2006) (Import)
At Westminster songs
$15.15 This Swedish multi-instrumental musician admits a debt to folk music in general and Chicago post-rock in particular. On his first U.S. full-length release, he conjures the shade of John Fahey, as well as elements of the Tortoise offshoot Pullman, in a set of gorgeously realized, dappled acoustic instrumentals like the childlike "Windplay" and the simple, hypnotic 'Second Summer," the latter of which has the hazy, cozy charm of a late autumn afternoon.
Swedish travelling musician Rickard Jäverling is a man with heart, something never more evident than when gliding through Two Times Five Lullaby -- his debut album. After spending some time in Ireland and Glasgow playing folk music to earn a living, Jäverling decided to return to his native Sweden and start laying down the tracks he'd always dreamed of with his musical friends in Stockholm. Taking influence from his love of American folk music, Chicago post-rock, classic Swedish prog and the pastoral ambience of Eno and Budd, Jäverling began ...
