| | Donald Byrd First Flight CD Donald Byrd Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This CD reissue contains trumpeter Donald Byrd's debut on records. Recorded in his native Detroit with such local players as tenor saxophonist Yusef Lateef, pianist Berry Harris and Bernard McKinney on euphonium, Byrd is heard at the age of 22 when he was very much influenced by Clifford Brown. Unlike Byrd, Lateef already had his own style at this early stage. The sextet mostly performs bop originals plus a blues, "Yusef" and "Torsion Level"; all of the music is straightahead and swinging. A fine beginning for the very interesting career of Donald Byrd. ~ Scott Yanow

Ever since their version of Bacharach-David song,"Close To You" hit the charts in 1970, the Carpenters have long seemed the epitome of anti-rock. Actually, Richard Carpenter revered the Beatles and Beach Boys just as much as Burt Bacharach. So there was more of a continuum with the '60s pop/rock tradition than appearances might suggest. Karen Carpenter is simply a singer of the first rank, comparable to pop divas like Patsy Cline and the Brazilian Elis Regina. On this classic (now remastered) singles collection, spanning hits from the early "Ticket To Ride" up until "Goodbye To Love," Karen's warm, sure voice, filled with an uncanny (and sad) grace, transforms smooth pop melodies and lyrics into something deep and ...
| | Angela Winbush Real Thing CD (1989)
First Flight CD music
$5.25 In the late 1980s, thin-voiced females who couldn't sing were quite prevalent in the urban contemporary arena. But thankfully, singers like Meli'sa Morgan, Vesta Williams and Angela Winbush were around to remind us that big-voiced belters still had a place in R&B. Originally part of the duo Rene & Angela, Winbush went solo in 1987 and formed a lucrative partnership with husband-to-be Ronald Isley. Winbush's input proved ...
| | Ohio Players Fire CD (1975)
First Flight music CDs
$6.55 This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system.
It took the Ohio Players numerous albums to make their funk masterpiece, but when FIRE was released in 1974, it proved the culmination of the hard-driving, bass-and-horn-heavy formula they'd been refining since the late '60s. The title cut, which became one of the band's biggest and best-loved hits, starts off with a fire siren and doesn't cool down from there, dropping into a thick, irresistible groove that deepens with added layers of keys, horns, guitars, and overlapping vocals. These classic funk arrangements also power "Runnin' from the Devil" and the slinky "Smoke," which features a jazzy guitar and scat vocal interlude.
Ohio Players' records usually give equal weight to smooth R&B ballads as they do to funk workouts, and FIRE is no exception. The sunny, romantic medley "Together/Feelings" ...

| | Al Jarreau This Time CD (1980)
First Flight music CDs
$6.15 Al Jarreau finally found success in the U.S. after 1975's We Got By. The later albums that followed ,like 1977's live Look to the Rainbow and 1978's All Fly Home found him attaining the all-important cult status and accolades from the jazz community. Those facts made his switch to pop/R&B on This Time even more surprising. For This Time, Jarreau is paired with producer Jay Graydon. Despite his jazz credentials, This Time does prove that this style is where Jarreau truly prospers. The jittery "Never Give ...

| | Medeski, Martin & Wood Radiolarians II CD (2009) Digipak
First Flight album
$12.59 The second volume in keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood's Radiolarians series is, much like the first, wildly eclectic. Certainly all the trio's records could be classified in this way, but few of them are as playful and musically adventurous as the ones in this series. Once more, the band incorporates everything in its own brand of modern jazz: from funk and rhythm & blues to the vanguard tradition; from soul and rock through carnival music, country, and beat-conscious grooves. "Flat Tires" opens the set and comes off all distorto-rockist in the intro thanks to Wood's nasty bassline that feels more like an electric guitar riffing before it's addressed by a couple of taut rolls by Martin and some wailing carnival organ by Medeski. This feels like film music, but it's more centered than that, because there are some stunning jazz improvs as Medeski's acoustic piano takes center stage. "Junkyard" follows. This cut, easily one of the best on ...
