This very interesting Delmark CD has formerly rare selections from three different groups in the mid-'40s. Pianist Earl Hines heads a septet that also features trumpeter Ray Nance, altoist Johnny Hodges, Flip Phillips on tenor and vocalist Betty Roche. Drummer Sonny Greer leads a group of Ellingtonians that include cornetist Rex Stewart, clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton, trombonist Lawrence Brown and baritonist Harry Carney, and high-note trumpet wiz Cat Anderson is at the helm of a competent (if somewhat anonymous) big band. All of this music is essentially swing with bop overtones and the 15 performances (originally on the Apollo label) are quite enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow

And The Duke's Men CD music
$11.19 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, ...

And The Duke's Men music CDs
$7.59 Recorded in 1950 at the dawn of the long-playing record era, three of these tracks--the vintage early-1930s compositions "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Solitude"--had only been previously been heard in their entirety in concert: before this release, record technology simply couldn't accommodate the full 10-minute-plus arrangements. The first four pieces, ...

| | Andrew Hill Judgement! CD (1964) Bonus Track; Remastered
And The Duke's Men album
$9.25 Andrew Hill's previous 1964 outing on Blue Note, the trio-only SMOKE STACK, had drummer Roy Haynes sounding so much like Elvin Jones that Hill brought in the real thing for next quartet session, JUDGEMENT! True to form, the always fiery Jones gets things off to an explosive start on "Siete Ocho," with Hill and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson keeping up as best they can. The warmly inventive Hutcherson remained an ideal musical partner for the abstract-minded pianist-composer, which was somewhat the same role that the bluesy ...

Herb Alpert puts a lot of spice into his music. Bold trumpeting is united with throbbing beats and sultry atmospheres. His music isn't simply dance music but a kind of story telling. Combining diverse elements into his performances, these songs evoke images and create emotions that add power to the rhythms.
