Thompson's terrific ode to a unique time and place in African-American history is filled with exciting musical ideas while also remaining accessible. Of particular note is the jumping "Some Freebop for Monk," with its criss-crossed melodic lines over a steady bass pulse, and the "Mystery of Jazz" suite. ~ Tim Sheridan

47th Street album
$14.35 This album brings together two Rosolino recording sessions made in the Netherlands during 1973 and 1976 which sat somewhere for 20 years. One of jazz's premier players, this album displays Rosolino's unique facility with the trombone. Although he died tragically in 1978, he remains an major influence on the way the slide instrument is played. The opening cut sets the tone with a 13 minute plus exploration of all the nooks and crannies of "All the Things You Are." This is followed by a similar in-depth improvisional probe of "My Funny Valentine." Although the Metropole Orchestra is highlighted on the album cover, it is present on just 2 of the 7 tracks . One of them, "Violets," ...

| | George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD (2003) Remastered
47th Street album
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while the stellar tracks from Breezin', namely "This Masquerade," which charted at number one on pop and R&B in Billboard, ...

| | Mighty Blue Kings Meet Me In Uptown CD (1996)
47th Street album
$12.65 While the Mighty Blue Kings rose to cult prominence during the new swing craze of the 1990s, the attention the raucous Chicago band received from the latter's world was more incidental than anything. For one thing, the charismatic Ross Bon (and company) trafficked in the sort of jump blues of the Louis Jordan variety. And the Mighty Blue Kings were no mere mirror or cover band, they hooted and hollered with a raw energy not out of place 50 years earlier in a stumbled-upon juke joint. Stunning 1995 debut MEET ME IN UPTOWN sneaks in with an intro instrumental of "Jumpin' at the Green Mill" before launching into a mix of pure silly fun ("Rag Mop") and sultry ("Spark of My Life") and often both ("Buzz Buzz Buzz").
'My music is about the way that I embrace life; with spontaneity and emotion; it's all about a connection' says Ross Bon when describing his musical evolution.Ross possesses a distinctive ...
