Ken Vandermark's Sound In Action Trio: Ken Vandermark (saxophone); Tim Mulvenna, Robert Barry (drums).
An excellent recording from Chicago jazzmen Ken Vandermark, Tim Mulvenna, and Robert Barry. The trio takes classic "out" tunes and originals and makes them sparkle, giving each a clean execution that's as much inspired energy as it is technique and craft. Barry interlaces with Mulvenna, achieving a complementary and balanced percussion section that sometimes acts as foil, sometimes impetus, for the directions of the reed playing. Easily one of Vandermark's best recorded dates yet (it's a treat to hear his clarinet work here, too), Design in Time is filled with that certain something that's sometimes missing from his studio recordings, but never from his live shows. Particularly hot tracks include the trio's takes on Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Ornette Coleman's "Feet Music." Vandermark's piece for Billy Higgins, "Well Suited," is a lovely ballad, featuring warm saxophone and summer-shower drum solos. Design in Time is a very strong jazz release that becomes more wowing and impressive with each listen. ~ Joslyn Layne
clarinet/tenor saxophonist Vandermark forges the jazz sound of the future, while retaining a healthy respect for his musical elders, and the Sound In Action Trio recorded here is built around one of them - former Sun Ra drummer Robert Barry, as well as d

Design In Time album
$12.89 World music has been a major influence on Roy Campbell; so it isn't surprising that the chance-taking trumpeter/flügelhornist would call this 2000 session Ethnic Stew and Brew. Leading his cohesive Pyramid Trio -- which also includes bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake -- Campbell combines mildly avant-garde jazz with African, Asian, and Middle Eastern elements. One of the more African-influenced tracks is "Amadou Diallo," an emotional piece that was inspired by the tragic shooting of an African immigrant in New York ...

Design In Time CD music
$8.85 Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Cedar Walton (piano); Reggie Workman (bass).
Lee Morgan once again became part of the Jazz Messengers after replacing Freddie Hubbard, who left after replacing Morgan originally. The band is rounded out by pianist Cedar Walton, a steaming Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and bassist Reggie Workman with Art Blakey on the skins, of course. Indestructible is a hard-blowing blues 'n' bop date with Shorter taking his own solos to the outside a bit, and with Blakey allowing some of Fuller's longer, suite-like ...
