When Malachi Thompson calls his music "free bop," it isn't empty rhetoric; he really does take a free, open-minded approach to bop, and he savors "the tradition" without being enslaved by it. Recorded at three separate sessions in 1997, 1998, and 1999, Rising Daystar is primarily a hard bop/post-bop CD -- Malachi originals like "Mansa," "Song for Morgan" (an ode to Lee Morgan, one of the trumpeter's main influences) and the title song would have fit in easily on an album by Jazz Messengers, Lee Morgan, or Freddie Hubbard in the early 1960s. But while Rising Daystar is more inside than outside and often underscores Thompson's appreciation of Morgan and Hubbard's classic Blue Note output, the Chicagoan isn't limited to that approach. Thompson also has AACM credentials, and on "Fanfare for Trane" (Trane as in John Coltrane) and "Circles in the Air," he detours into the avant garde and savors the pleasures of dissonant outside improvisation. Thompson doesn't play trumpet at all on "Circles in the Air"; joined by drummer Dana Hall and the late bassist Fred Hopkins (1948-1999), he gets into some very eccentric, stream-of-consciousness scat singing and spoken word. Alto and soprano saxman Gary Bartz and tenor saxman Sonny Seals are among Thompson's other noteworthy guests on this appealing CD. ~ Alex Henderson

Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner ...

| | Herb Alpert What Now My Love CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
Rising Daystar album
$9.99 With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band now; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, we can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive rhythm guitar, Lou Pagani's piano, the droll Bob Edmondson's dulcet trombone, etc. Pisano, who debuted as a composer on Going Places, comes up with a memorably whistleable song "So What's New," and the rest of Alpert's songwriting brigade (Ervan Coleman, Julius Wechter and Sol Lake) chime in with some lively, catchy tunes. There is also an assortment of pop, film, and Broadway ...
| | Bebel Gilberto All In One CD (2009)
Rising Daystar CD music
$12.05 With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments ...

| | Jughead CD (2002)
Rising Daystar CD music
$14.09 Who could have guessed King's X's guitarist, Ty Tabor, had what it takes to write the perfect pop record? Well, OK, maybe Jughead's eponymous disc is not that perfect -- and maybe it's not that pop -- but it's one very nice surprise. For this project, Tabor enlisted the rhythm section of Matt and Gregg Bissonette, along with Planet X (and once Dream Theater) keyboardist Derek Sherinian. Despite the lineup, prog metal fans are in for a shock: Besides guitar riffs crunchier than on your average pop album, this music has little to do with King's X. Instead, think of the lighter side of Spock's Beard (or Neal Morse's first solo effort). Think of rock music with your feet in the sand, of summer holidays, of the Beatles and the Beach Boys casting their influence on a singer/guitarist ...
