| | Willie Bryant Blues Around The Clock CD Willie Bryant Discography of CDs
Willie Bryant, an important bandleader for a time in the 1930s, was a familiar and likable fixture at the Apollo Ballroom in the 1940s and '50s, acting as an M.C. and taking an occasional vocal. This Delmark CD draws its songs from the Apollo label and emphasizes early R&B. Ten songs feature Bryant (including two-part versions of "Blues Around the Country" and "Blues Around the Clock") and on some of the tracks the backup group features altoist Tab Smith and trumpeter Taft Jordan. Doc Pomus and the obscure Bob Range have four vocals apiece, Laurel Watson is heard on two songs and Ben Smith sings "Reboppin' for Red." This CD is consistently satisfying and easily recommended to fans of the era. ~ Scott Yanow

Blues Around The Clock album
$12.35 Pepper Adams was one of the greatest jazz baritone saxophonists of all time. During a time when Gerry Mulligan's cool-toned baritone was very influential, Adams rose to prominence with a harder and bigger sound, much more hard bop than cool. This relatively obscure release, originally an LP for the World Pacific label, finds the baritonist in Los Angeles matching his hard-driving style with several players identified with West Coast cool jazz. Trumpeter Lee Katzman, who is on every selection but "Blackout Blues" and "Four Funky People," has a tone closer to Chet Baker than to Donald Byrd, but fits in well with Adams. The rhythm section is mostly laid-back and quiet but swinging. A joy of this CD reissue is the repertoire, which contains catchy originals ...
| | Davy Knowles Roll Away CD (2007)
Blues Around The Clock CD music
$14.29 Who would have thought the guy who sang "money for nothing and your chicks for free" could inspire a kid to grow up and become one of the most promising bluesmen of his generation -- at the tender age of 20? The listener doesn't need to know the back story of this slamming, high-intensity Isle of Man-based blues-rock trio led by multi-talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist Davy Knowles to be inspired by the band's blistering excitement. But like all tales of great blues makers, origins are important, so here goes: at age 11, Knowles was in the car with his father and heard Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing," which changed his life and put him on a mission to explore Dad's vast record collection. This included John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Rory Gallagher. Then Knowles started listening to their influences, soaking up Blind Willie Johnson and Robert Johnson. Back Door Slam's in-your-face debut rumbles out of the gate with the rollicking rocker "Come Home," a perfect intro to Knowles' crisply sizzling licks and gruff, wise, and pained-beyond-his-years vocals. The slow-burning "Heavy on My Mind" is the song Clapton wishes he wrote, with Knowles completely capturing the legend's vibe and intensity while ...

Blues Around The Clock album
$14.65 Medellin is a re-titled reissue of Juan Carlos Quintero's 1992 self-titled solo debut, remastered, shuffled slightly in song order and with one new track, an acoustic revision of his fan favorite "Anoche." Quintero mostly plays acoustic throughout the 10-song set, accompanied by a pair of other guitarists (including the great Tommy Tedesco), electronic and acoustic keyboards, bass, drums and occasional sax and trumpet. The resulting music is based on the Colombian-born, Berklee-trained musician's artful blending of Latin and European jazz styles in the Stan Getz style. Neither tradition is entirely dominant over the other, either on the title track (a heartfelt homage to Quintero's native city) or on standards like "My Favorite Things." Medellin may well be too slick for ...
