It's always sad when, for whatever reason, a worthwhile recording goes unreleased for a long time -- and that's exactly what happened with Pepper's Hangout. On March 29, 1977, a 48-year-old Jimmy Johnson entered a Chicago studio and recorded what was meant to be his first studio LP as a leader. The LP had a working title of "Chicago Roots," and Living Blues editor Jim O'Neal was hired to write the liner notes. But regrettably, an album that should have come out in 1977 wasn't released in the U.S. until 2000, when Delmark was finally able to release the session as Pepper's Hangout. Better late than never -- this CD finds Johnson in fine form and makes one wish that the singer/guitarist hadn't waited until his late 40s to record some albums. Though Johnson includes one soul number (Eddie Jones' "The Things I Used to Do"), this is a blues disc first and foremost -- and Johnson is as passionate and confident on Robert Higginbotham's "High Heel Sneakers" and Tony Hollins' "Married Woman Blues" as he is on original material like "Looking for My Baby" (which inspires comparison to Buddy Guy's "Hello, San Francisco") and the instrumental "Pepper's Hangout." Delmark, to its credit, provides two sets of liner notes: O'Neal's original notes from 1977 and some new ones that he wrote 23 years later in October 2000. Without question, the release of this session in the U.S. was long overdue. ~ Alex Henderson

Jimmy proved himself as one of the best contemporary blues artists in the late '70s & early '80s, with 2 killer albums on Delmark; produced by the legendary Ralph Bass (James Brown, T-Bone Walker, Little Esther Phillips) in 1977, this album is Chicago bl

Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs  (1989) Box Set

Pepper's Hangout album
CD $38.49  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts. Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson. Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes. DREAMS' ...

Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs  (1990)

This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos. This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of ...

Finally reissued on CD in 1999, nearly 20 years after its initial release, Jimmy Johnson's North/South is worth the wait for fans of electric Chicago blues with soul and rock influences. Probably named in tribute to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's epic East-West album (Butterfield's guitarist Michael Bloomfield had died just prior to the album's recording), North/South is third-generation Chicago blues, far enough removed from the music's gutbucket origins to seamlessly incorporate influences like Eddie Lusk's soulful clavinet on the opening "Country Preacher," but still connected enough to its roots that songs like "Can't ...

Magic Sam Rockin' Wild In Chicago CD  (2002)

CD $12.59  3 stars Audio Samples
Back in the '60s and '70s -- before bootleggers had the generally higher standards that they have today -- it wasn't uncommon to hear a collector defending a bootleg LP despite its inferior sound quality. The argument was usually something along the lines of, "Yes, the sound is poor, but I still recommend this Led Zeppelin bootleg because Jimmy Page absolutely burns when they do 'Whole Lotta Love.'" Rockin' Wild in Chicago isn't a bootleg -- this Delmark release is totally legal -- but it merits the same sort of defense that vinyl collectors often gave '60s and '70s bootlegs back in the day. A collection of live performances that spans 1963-1968 but didn't come out until 2002, Rockin' Wild in Chicago was recorded at three different Windy City venues: the Copacabana, the Alex Club, and Mother Blues. This CD definitely won't impress audiophiles; the sound quality ranges from barely decent to genuinely bad (by '60s standards). But the performances themselves are generally ...
