An album both haunting and inspiring, tragic and mesmerizing, Eva by Heart was the singer's only true studio album, and hints at the promise which was never to materialize due to her early demise from cancer. Five of the songs on this set ("I Know You by Heart," "Time Is a Healer," "Wayfaring Stranger," "Wade in the Water," and "Songbird") appear on her Songbird collection. The import version of Eva by Heart contains an extra track, "Dark End of the Street," which does not appear on the American version, or on any of her albums for that matter. The styles range from folksy (the sweet "I Know You by Heart"), to soulful ("Time Is a Healer"), to introspective ("Say Goodbye," "Waly Waly"), to downright rousing ("Wayfaring Stranger," "How Can I Keep From Singing?") and bluesy ("Blues in the Night."). Eva's voice always sounds crystalline, and her interpretive skills are unmatched (as evidenced on her lovely take of Christine McVie's "Songbird"). The woman had the power to transform a standard or a traditional into her own song, and she could belt out the blues just as good as anybody else (take one listen to "Blues in the Night" or her duet with Chuck Brown, "Need Your Love So Bad"). This disc, as with any of her works, and the posthumous fame she achieved but never sought, stand as testimony as to how true artistry, despite whatever circumstances, has the capacity to transcend, and her story should prove inspiring to any truly talented and struggling musician out in the world. ~ Jose Promis

Eva Cassidy Eva By Heart Songs Eva By Heart Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Great CD For Cassidy Fans If you love Eva Cassidy and don't have this CD, you need to add it to your collection. Like all that have discovered Eva Cassidy, her sound is totally fresh even on old standards which she makes her own.
The highlight of this collection is her arrangement and vocal styling of "Wade In The Water" an old gospel hymm. Overall the songs here are bluezy, jazzy fun! Submitted by awkofmark ("Bay Area, CA USA") Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Soulful Music Hearing Eva Cassidy for the first time makes one extremely sad that she's no longer with us. Her timeless and beautiful sound makes you feel like she's singing just to you in the comfort of your car or home. What an artist and what a loss to the musical community! Excellent example of a versitle female blues/pop vocalist Eva Cassidy has one of the most beautiful voices. Her guitar and musical capabilities rank high in my book.. Her integrity to hold true to her views on music style, shows musician can share their talents without having to bow to label demands for their views on commercial success. Too Little, Too Late Eva Cassidy has a musical instrument for a voice. She uses it with perfection. From melancholy mellow to jazzy blues, each song leaves you wondering what she'll do next. She soothes, surprises and stirs things up, but never disappoints! Eva made only a few CD's before she died of cancer. A tragic loss, but her music lives on. Eva Cassidy would color outside of the lines. I now have 3 CDs by Eva Cassidy: Eva By Heart, Songbird, and Live at Blues Alley. Although I thoroughly enjoy all three, Eva By Heart is my favorite for Say Goodbye and Nightbird. I had to listen to the CD a few times before I realized that I knew many of the songs. Eva's re-interpretation is so creative and soulful that she breathes new life into the most trite of old Top 40. I'll bet she never drew inside the lines. I'll bet she could have made even a Pokemon coloring book seem interesting. I'm so hooked on Eva Cassidy that I can't listen to anyone else. Even Bonnie Raitt and Sarah MacLaughlin sound boring to me now. Submitted by a reviewer (Gorham, NH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.19 Ornette Coleman's epic 1959 LPs The Shape of Jazz to Come and Change of the Century were pivot points in modern post-bop jazz and early creative music. This recording is a prelude to those epics, a live two-night engagement in October of 1958 at the Hillcrest Club in Los Angeles. The Coleman quintet, with trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Billy Higgins, plus a then-young pianist Paul Bley, sets up that new shape of jazz. This eight-selection set features three of Coleman's signature originals, two standards, and three lesser-known, fairly rare pieces that Coleman did at the time. The program kicks off with Charlie Parker's "Klactoveedsedstene," an on-fire free bopper where Coleman's alto sax in tandem with Cherry reflects a quest for cleanliness and innocent, alive freshness, well transferred, balanced, and reproduced digitally. Whoever tagged this music unlistenable needs to revisit the symbiosis of the front-line horns present. Three of Coleman's all-time immortal compositions on call are the relaxed and easily swung harmolodic dream "The Blessing" accented by Ornette's piquant alto, the call-and-response-laden "When Will the Blues Leave?," and the post-bop evergreen "Ramblin'." The stairstep ascending and descending melody for "Free" also remains arresting, taking no prisoners. It's interesting how alleged rebel Coleman pays reverence to two ballad standards, Roy Eldridge's pensive "I Remember Harlem" and Cherry's trumpet-led "How Deep Is the Ocean?" Closing is the frantic, scattershot ...
