An Extraordinary Epic into the People Behind the Legend...
"Ashes of Time" isn't your typical high voltage, bloody, slice-'em-up action flick that your used to from this (hong kong) genre... Instead Wong Kar-Wai has decided to focus much of the movie on the characters themselves... the whole cast is a "who's who" of HK movies... its yet another movie depicting an old chinese myth of legendary warriors (Poison West & Evil East)... this is hypnotic and haunting at the same time in that it puts you into this desolate world that swordsman must live in and that no matter how great and mighty they are with the sword... that they are not spared by the bitter pains and aching memories of past loves and heartaches... cinematography is excellent... the camera catches the vastness and lonliness in the landscape as how each of these swordsman must feel within... much of movie is in dark corners and shadowy rooms... the fighting scenes are fast and the slo-mo work is really nothing new to this genre... Standout Actors: Tony Leung plays a great young Evil East character... i thought he was perfectly casted... but hands down Brigitte Lin takes the honours for this film... playing a dual role of brother and sister Ying and Yang.
