While this meeting of blues greats should be an important document, the sad fact is that the group sounds unrehearsed and past their prime. While some tunes, such as "43rd Street Jump" and "Freedom Train" have some real drive and feeling, much of the material is sloppy at best. The one thing that stands out on the album is the vocals, with each of these giants taking lead on several tracks. The variety of styles in their blues singing is a treat. ~ Tim Sheridan

"The music has the unforced feel of (Chicago's) blues of the late 30s and 40s without once sounding anachronistic. The five musicians (playing as a quintet) share the vocal duties, providing striking contrasts...All the material is original in the true sense, not just old blues with reshuffled lyrics and new titles, and the quintet interprets it with real conviction. Horton is featured on seven of the seventeen numbers." - Manchester, England Evening News

Kenny Wayne Shepherd 10 Days Out... Blues From The Backroad CD  (2007) With DVD

Old Friends album
CD $21.79  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Shepherd's reverence for his musical roots are centerstage on this CD/DVD package featuring the guitarslinger with rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drumer Chris slayton performing with some of the greatest blues players of our time as well as lesser-known but historically significant bluesmen. Traveling to their hometowns to record everywhere from juke joints to front porches, from New Orleans to Kansas, Shepherd celebrates and becomes part of blues history. More than a mere live album, this collection of impromptu performances, recorded at both established venues and in kitchens and on front porches throughout the American South, captures a rapidly vanishing generation of bluesmen and women singing and playing with the blues musician Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his Double Trouble rhythm section. Featuring well-known artists such as B.B. King and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, as well as lesser-known performers such as Wild Child Butler and Cootie Stark, this combination CD and DVD is both a tribute to and a record of the musicians who influenced Shepherd, and a chance to observe the art form that laid the foundations for much of modern music. Often supported only by Shepherd's acoustic guitar, artists of the caliber of Cootie Stark, whose "Prison Blues" is a highlight, and the pianist Pinetop Perkins, whose "Grindin' Man" is accompanied by Muddy Waters' band, exude a matter-of-fact mastery born of decades of hard-won experience. Born In Louisiana The Thrill Is Gone Chapel Hill Boogie Knoxville Rag Big Daddy Boogie Tears Come Rollin' Down Got My Mojo Working DVD Features: DVD includes: Personnel: Kenny Wayne Shepherd (vocals, guitar); Tommy Shannon (bass guitar); Chris Layton (drums); Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Cootie Stark, Etta Baker, George "Wild Child" Butler, Henry Gray, Henry Townsend, Hubert Sumlin, Jerry "Boogie" McCain, John Dee Holeman, Muddy Waters Band, Neal Pattman, Pinetop Perkins, B.B. From the slinky, sexy opener, "Best Damn Fool," to the blues history lesson of "Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes," to the slow-burn closer "I Found Happiness," Guy doesn't seem to have mellowed with age. In fact, he wails and shreds here with as much passion as ever. Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Robert Randolph all lend a hand, but Buddy is in charge here, much the way he has always been. By the time SKIN DEEP was released in 2008, Buddy Guy was in his early 70s. The thing is, there are only a few tell-tale signs that Guy has aged any since his blistering work from the 1960s and `70s, and these signs-which include the slick, contemporary production, and the veteran-performer trend of having a parade of guest artists on the album-- are largely superficial. In truth, Guy still plays and sings like the urban blues monster he remains. Personnel: Susan Tedeschi (vocals); Quinn Sullivan, David Grissom (guitar); Derek Trucks (slide guitar); Lannie McMIllian, Kirk Smothers (tenor saxophone); ...

Eric Clapton Blues CDs  (1999)

Old Friends album
CD $17.19  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded between 1970 and 1980. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Group Studios). Prior to Eric Clapton's pop- and MTV-driven mid-'80s work, he spent the '70s and early '80s playing languid, singer-songwriter soft rock evocative of J.J. Cale and Don Edwards. But Clapton always kept one foot in the blues of his youth. BLUES brings this material together in one place and throughout, Slowhand taps into an inner spirituality that does these blues standards well. The first disc contains studio recordings that include tributes to many influences including Elmore James ("The Sky Is Crying") and Willie Dixon ("Meet Me [Down At the Bottom]"). Most impressive is a stripped-down version of Little Walter's "Mean Old World," in which Clapton and Duane Allman duet using National steel and slide guitars. The tempo picks up during an alternate version of Bo Diddley's "Before You Accuse Me" that becomes a rollicking shuffle and a cover of Muddy Water's "Blow Wind Blow" in which Clapton's guitar parries with Gary Brooker's piano. On disc two, "Live Blues," Slowhand's playing deliciously simmers on material by Robert Johnson and Otis Rush. He eventually cuts loose as he trades licks with his hero Freddie King on a joyous cover of Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Further on Up the Road." Contains 5 previously unreleased tracks. Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar, dobro); Albert Lee (guitar, background vocals); Duane Allman, Freddie King, Dave Mason, Ron Wood, George Terry (guitar); Dick Sims (piano, organ); Bobby Whitlock (piano); Gary Brooker (keyboards, background vocals); Chris Stainton ...

Keb' Mo' Slow Down CD  (1998) Enhanced CD

CD $7.59  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
SLOW DOWN is a Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. SLOW DOWN won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Let's dispel a common misconception right off the bat; Keb Mo is not a blues singer. To call him one would be as limiting as calling Lyle Lovett a country singer. He's got his finger in too many musical pies to be tied down to one tradition. As SLOW DOWN makes plain, his songs are certainly bluesy, but like Taj Mahal, he takes the style an mingles it with so many others that a new paradigm is created. Keb Mo's snappy, soulful acoustic guitar is the central element of most of the tunes here, but there's everything from funk to R&B to '70s-sounding rock-pop at work in these songs. As a composer, Keb Mo knows how to get down to the basics of human emotions and trials without lapsing into cliche, and his no-nonsense vocal delivery communicates his message effectively. Blues traditionalists may not get what they've been led to expect from SLOW DOWN, but if they've got butts and feet, they won't be able to keep 'em still. Personnel: Keb' Mo' (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Colin Linden (guitar, mandolin); Anders Osborne (guitar, background vocals); Joellen Friedkin (accordion, keyboards, synthesizers); Gerald Albright (tenor saxophone); Reggie Young (trombone); John Lewis Parker (keyboards, samples); John Barnes (keyboards); Reggie McBride (bass); Laval Belle (drums); Munyungo Jackson (percussion); Sir Harry Bowens, Sweet Pea Atkinson, Lisa Linson (background vocals). Memphis Minnie Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 4 (1933-1934) CD  (1991) Import

Old Friends music CDs
CD $13.25
The last of a 4-CD series of reissues of the recordings of Memphis Minnie and her husband/recording partner, Kansas Joe McCoy. Although the title credits the material herein to Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe, very few of the tracks which comprise this volume are actually collaborative efforts between the duo -- by 1933 their personal and professional relationships were both on the rocks, with Minnie instead recording solo and Joe working with his guitarist brother Charlie. The Minnie solo sides which open the set are uniformly excellent, with the saucy "My Butcher Man" spotlighting her gifts as a lyricist and the Mississippi-styled "Too Late" underscoring her guitar prowess. By mid-1934, some measure of reconciliation had clearly been reached, as the couple was now performing together again; ...

Screamin Jay Hawkins Best Of The Bizarre Sessions: 1990-1994 CDs  (2000)

Old Friends songs
CD $18.69  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
This 18-song compilation is taken from three albums that Screamin' Jay Hawkins recorded in the early '90s for Bizarre/Straight Records: Black Music for White People, Stone Crazy, and Somethin' Funny Goin On. While these albums contain some spirited performances, including the hysterical operatic version of "Ol Man River," they do not contain the fire or spontaneity of his classic '50s recordings. Some of the material may have been too sincere for Hawkins' style, such as the two songs penned by Tom Waits: "Ice Cream Man" and "Heart Attack and Vine." While "Ignant and Shit," "Shut Your Mouth When You Sneeze," and "Swamp Gas" swing in the opposite direction, proving the song titles funnier than the actual songs. Best of the Bizarre Sessions: 1990-1994 has its moments, but for a clearer glimpse of Hawkins original R&B theatrics which created such a stir in the '50s check out the Rhino compilation Voodoo Jive: The Best of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. ~ Al Campbell Additional Tracks Recorded at Tracks II, Hollywood, California between October 1990 and December 1990; For The Record Studios, Orange, California in January, 1994. A bit about Steven Walters.

With a playful simplicity, and a fresh approach to contemporary folk music, Steven Walters invokes the most tender feeling level of the heart, moving you deeply --- to joy and laughter one moment, unabashed tears the next. With deftly woven lyrics and masterful guitar work, his songs are offerings of humor, spirit and sweetness -- serious music for the lighthearted soul.

Since age seven, Steven has made a life's work of writing and performing original music. For twenty years he enjoyed a career on the road as a professional guitarist and vocalist in blues and country music bands. In 1993, after being diagnosed with leukemia and told he had 24 hours to live, Steven began a period of intensive meditation. Miraculously, he became strong enough to receive a bone marrow transplant and make a full recovery. Inspired by this second chance, in 1995 Steven began to truly live his dream, giving up the smoky bars and club circuit to perform his original music.

Steven performs and speaks at diverse venues including concert halls, festivals, conferences, new thought churches, folk clubs and intimate house concerts worldwide. Events at which he has been invited to share his gifts include: concerts and workshops at the Esalen Institute; The Rainbow Festival, (Germany), The No mind Festival, (Sweden) The Alternative Festival, (Norway) benefit concerts for the Gangaji Foundation (also featured in ...

Complete Blue Horizon Sessions
Chicken Shack Complete Blue Horizon Sessions CDs  (2006) Remastered

Old Friends CD music
CD $15.09  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Formed and led by guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb, Chicken Shack were one of the first bands to be signed to the Blue Horizon label in the mid-'60s. As of this compilation's release in 2006, Webb was still fronting a version of the group. While never attaining any success in the States, Chicken Shack were well known in the U.K., with fleeting success second only to John Mayall and labelmates Fleetwood Mac. Webb's Freddie King-styled guitar and vocalist/pianist Christine Perfect's (later McVie) singing were the major draws to this second-tier British blues band, but neither were strong enough to carry the group's success to the U.S. market. This three-disc set collects the band's entire output for the imprint from 1967-1969 and includes alternate takes, singles, and B-sides (56 tracks in all), and also features terrific liner notes by label head/producer Mike Vernon. Perfect stayed for two of four releases for the label, exiting before the recording of 1969's 100 Ton Chicken. Hence she appears on about half of this disc, leaving after the U.K. hit single "I'd Rather Go Blind." Webb's often wobbly but amiable singing is an acquired taste, so Perfect's husky, smooth vocals and classy blues piano runs were major contributions to the band, and strong points they never adequately replaced. Occasional use of horns distinguished Chicken Shack from both Mac and Savoy Brown, another band very much in the Shack style and one with whom they swapped members. These three discs include the contents of four albums and assorted singles, with much of this music hard to obtain. The remastering is excellent, too, and it's safe to say that Chicken Shack have never sounded better. But the band wasn't strong or innovative enough to maintain interest over these four albums, making this all-inclusive set essential only for fans, collectors, and those looking to research the roots of Christine Perfect's pre-Fleetwood Mac sultry blues-tinged pop. Everyone else can make due with 2004's The Very Best of Chicken Shack, a single disc that cherry-picks the better tunes from the Blue Horizon era. ~ Hal Horowitz Chicken Shack: Paul Raymond, Stan Webb (acoustic guitar); Big Walter Horton (harmonica); Johnny Almond, Bud Beadle (alto saxophone); Don Fey (tenor saxophone); ...

On 2007's CLOSE AS YOU GET, Irish guitar hero Gary Moore offers up a wonderfully spare set of blues tunes. While the album features plenty of top-notch covers (see John Mayall's "Have You Heard" and Son House's "Sundown"), many of the finest moments are Moore's own songs--most notably, the smoky "Trouble at Home"--which sound like they were written ...
