 Hogwood's Beethoven Symphonies
Taking its place with sets by Norrington, Gardiner, and Goodman, Christopher Hogwood's complete Beethoven symphonies set bears the competition well. Perhaps the best recorded of the bunch, Hogwood's usual attention to detail and his fine orchestra rise to the challenge. His period instrument approach here is less mannered than his earlier Mozart complete symphonies, which despite their astringency and clipped phrasing, offer interesting and refreshing insights. But so does this set without eccentricities or extreme tempi. Drama still prevails in these readings, and this set will wear very well over years of listening.
