| | Dr L Subramaniam 3 Ragas For Solo Violin CD (1991) (Import)
Haydn: Concertos For Oboe, Trumpet, Harpsichord / Pinnock
$15.05 An exposition of three South Indian ragas performed on the violin (in Indian style of course) by the great Lakshminarayana Subramaniam. "Raga Sarasvatipriya" is basically "Raga Sarasvati," but with some slight modifications. Similarly, "Raga Vasantapriya" is essentially "Raga Vasanta." The main factor to note in the performance of such works is the incredible virtuosity displayed by Subramaniam on his instrument. The ways in which he slides from note to note are particular to the South Indian violin styles in some ways, and add a huge factor to the music. On top of this, he is the first and/or major player of the violin to go electric with it (something of the Bob Dylan of Karnatic instrumental classical music), though it is somewhat difficult to tell whether or not that is having much of an effect on this recording. As with nearly any recording of Indian music, the length is the one thing that newcomers really have to watch out for -- songs are regularly longer than 20 minutes each. Still, this album may not be such a bad introduction to the styles of playing common to the subcontinent's classical genres. ~ Adam Greenberg
Recorded at Wyastone Leys, Monmouth, England on June 17, 1991. Includes liner notes by Dr. John R. Marr.
Personnel: L. Subramaniam (violin); Narendra Katlyan (tanpura).

$18.99 Biography[LOOP 2.4.3]From edgy to impressionistic, classical to avante garde, the percussion music of performers/composers Thomas Kozumplik and Lorne Watson takes the audience on “a really focussed and thrilling percussive ride,” creating vibrant contemporary music that is “enrapturing and truly alive indeed.” (NewNoise.net) Loop 2.4.3 employs the gamut of percussion instruments, from marimba and steel drum to tom-toms, bongos and snare drums, temple bowls and wood blocks, opera gongs and electronics. Their music has been described as “transportive percussion odysseys,” (The Boston Phoenix) “taut compositions with a stunning improvisational sense,” (TimeOut Chicago) and as containing of both “action adventures and reveries... all sound[ing] like part of a well-thought-out tradition, only the tradition has never existed until now.” (NPR Fresh Air)Based in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood, Loop 2.4.3 has toured throughout North America, Europe, Scandinavia, South Korea, and Australia, and has performed for radio, film, and television, including footage for The Learning Channel and MTV.
