Frecuencia Cafre
$10.85 Personnel: Frankie Paul (vocals). Wisdom has it that the DJs were a plague upon the reggae scene, laying waste to singers by the score. However, that wasn't the whole story. Henry "Junjo" Lawes, the producer as responsible as anyone for the inexorable rise of the toasters, was also instrumental in reinventing old talent (e.g. Johnny Osbourne) or bringing out new to stardom, like Frankie Paul. Paul linked up with the producer in 1984 for a clutch of stunning hits, culminating in that year's Pass the Ku-Sheng- Peng album, titled after one of his biggest. Although still in his teens, Paul exhibited an amazing vocal ...

Frecuencia Cafre
$27.59 This 1995 live date of the Italian group known as Jazz in Trio -- Salvatore Bonafede, piano; Dario Deidda, bass; Mimmo Cafiero, drums -- is one of their most electrifying on record. With a wild swirl of compositions and covers sometimes folded gloriously into one another, this trio manages to sing their way through a set seamlessly, evoking all of jazz's important periods, and infusing them with both a European sense of classicism and a Roman sense of melodic invention. A stellar example is the opening medley of Bonafede's "My Sun" with Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing." Bonafede delves deep into Vince Guaraldi for his inspiration ...

| | Bill Dixon 17 Musicians In Search Of A Sound: Darfur CD (2008)
Frecuencia Cafre
$12.59 Composer: Bill Dixon. Personnel: Bill Dixon (trumpet); Michel Cote (clarinet, e flat clarinet); Will Connell (clarinet); Will Connell Jr. (bass clarinet); Karen Borca, Karen Borca (bassoon); Andrew Raffo Dewar (soprano saxophone); John Hagen (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Stephen Haynes , Graham Haynes, Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet, flugelhorn); Dick Griffin, Steve Swell (trombone, tenor trombone); Joseph Daley (tuba); Jackson Krall (drums, percussion); Warren Smith (percussion). Audio Mixer: Nick Lloyd. Recording information: Vision Festival XII, New York, NY (06/20/2007). Photographer: Nick Ruechel. Free-jazz legend Bill Dixon has been honing his radical musical vision, through trumpet, composing, and his activism in the music scene, ever since the 1960s. He continues to do so with 2008's 17 MUSICIANS IN SEARCH OF A SOUND: DARFUR. A sonic mirror to the atrocities and desperation of the genocide-stricken country, DARFUR is a startling statement. Dixon plays trumpet and bass clarinet, while conducting the 17-strong ensemble through a highly structured series of theme-oriented improvisations. Tonal color and expressionistic playing dominate, with vibes and percussion adding flavor to the voicing of the woodwinds and brass. The pieces can be wrenching, yet also highly lyrical and affecting, once again reinforcing Dixon's place in the avant-jazz pantheon. As Bill Dixon's recordings are few and far between, there must also be a profound theme that inspires his music. In this instance, the horrific and under-publicized military-driven genocide in Darfur brought him to make music on the stage of the Vision Festival XII in New York City with a 17-piece band to reflect the anguish and turmoil of the strife-stricken area in the West Sudan region of Africa. But this is not an angry or disgusted expressionistic music, but one that reflects the distant outcries of the people in Darfur who need help from the world community. Dixon, on lead trumpet and as conductor, has formed a band of such mighty improvisers as Taylor Ho Bynum, veteran multiphonic trombonists Dick Griffin and Steve Swell, Karen Borca, J.D. Parran, Jackson Krall, and Warren Smith with a handful of lesser-known creative musicians. The trumpet section with Bynum, Graham Haynes, and Stephen Haynes is most impressive, as are the low-end woodwinds like bass saxophonist Parran, bass clarinetists Will Connell and Michel Cote, ...
