Due to various legal troubles, Mac Dre didn't have the opportuntity to deliver a full-fledged follow-up to his second album, Young Black Brotha, until 1998 -- five years after YBB was released. The resulting record, Stupid Doo Doo Dumb, doesn't quite live up to its predecessor, mainly because it's missing the production of Khayree. His replacements, K Lou, Funk Daddy and Johnny Z, are all fine, but lack his distinctive spark. Nevertheless, they provide Mac Dre with a serviceable backdrop for his coolly funky West Coast hardcore hip-hop. Dre doesn't stray from the typical topics, but he has a good, stylish lyrical flow that makes Stupid ...

The methodology went like this: former Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk frontman Mike Patton sends hip-hopping turntable masters the X-Ecutioners a bunch of oddball records, then the X-Ecutioners create "sound blocks" out of the albums and send them back to Patton for final tweaking and song-building. Two years in the making, the collaboration feels more like a Patton project than an equal-footing outing, but that doesn't narrow the sound down much, does it? On one hand, there's Patton's penchant for the aggressively avant-garde. On the other, there's his not-as-wild-as-you'd-think appearance on Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People.
