Boston's Cul De Sac are standard-bearers of a new American instrumental psychedelia. They draw from dialects as diverse as surf guitar, avant-garage, Loren MazzaCane-Connors' ghost-blues exorcisms, the firestorm psych-pop of the '60s and '70s, and the ethnically flavored freeform folk of such mavericks as Sandy Bull, Robbie Basho, John Fahey, and the Sun City Girls. Given the guitar-centric quality of Cul de Sac's music, Glenn Jones is the immediate attraction. He is certainly a phenomenon, an axe-wielding artisan whose signatures include iridescent peacock-plume filigree, intricate fingerpicking, twangy scales and writhing feedback trails. Jones performs fabulous aerial acrobatics in "A Voice Through A Cloud" and "K," his guitar breathing flame and smoke like a dragon-god. "Hagstrom" describes dizzy melodic spirals and "Etaoin Shrdlu" tickles the clouds.
Just as essential to Cul de Sac's designs, Michael Bloom supplies the undulating, pivotal basslines-the cosmic glue that keeps the band's universe from flying to bits. Robin Amos' wizard-like command of unearthly synthesizer tones n' drones, and the astonishing dexterity and intuition that Jon Proudman demonstrates on the traps are equally vital to the immaculate textures and shimmering wonders wrought by this altogether peerless group.
