| | William Parker Painter's Spring CD William Parker Discography of CDs
A truly beautiful and stimulating album, William Parker's PAINTER'S SPRING is that rare jazz session that melds supreme creativity, technique, intuition, sensuousness, and surprise in perfect balance. Parker is most often associated with the avant garde (he has played bass for Cecil Taylor), and there is certainly a bold, far-reaching quality to these compositions. Yet they are also anchored by swing (note the driving groove on opener "Foundation #1), modal playing that recalls late-period Miles and Coltrane, and many a moment of shimmering, delicate beauty.
Parker's athletic bass-playing finds its perfect complement in the drumming of Hamid Drake, who impresses as both a free-time rhythm-keeper and a colorist of great sensitivity. The trio is rounded out by flautist, clarinetist, and saxophonist Daniel Carter, who helps--with his lovely sense of melody--direct the painterly line of this impressionistic music. The compositions are all penned by Parker, save a Duke Ellington cover and the spiritual "Balm of Gilead," but even the covers ring with this trio's unique, organic, and masterly approach.

Painter's Spring album
$11.65 Among the best of Mingus' later work, CHANGES TWO (and its companion disc CHANGES ONE, both recorded in a single session) is a compelling journey into the kaleidoscopic world of this genius bassist/composer. Recalling Duke Ellington in the ambitious scope of his meticulously crafted arrangements (and Mingus in fact pays tribute to the Duke here with "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love," ...
| | Matthew Shipp Pastoral Composure CD (2000)
Painter's Spring CD music
$13.19 You have to wonder what the deal is with Matthew Shipp. Barely a year after his "retirement" from recording, he turns around and releases a new disc. And it's a fine one, at that. For those who found Shipp's previous recording, the dense and challenging DNA, to be exactly those things, the opening tracks of PASTORAL COMPOSURE may sound like ear candy by comparison. ...

| | William Parker Raining On The Moon CD (2002)
Painter's Spring songs
$13.45 William Parker continues to go beyond the status quo on Raining on the Moon, his second offering in labelmate Matthew Shipp's Blue Series. Known mostly to a coterie of specialists in a niche field of avant-garde bass players, Parker's discography represents his enormous value to the new avant-garde movement of the 21st century. His works of progression get better with each offering, and this time around Parker departs from his previous solo ...
| | Matthew Shipp Equilibrium CD (2003)
Painter's Spring album
$13.85 Here is yet another chapter in Thirsty Ear's provocative and consistently excellent Blue Series. Here, employing the talents of bassist William Parker, drummer Gerald Cleaver, vibraphonist Khan Jamal, and electronics and programming whiz FLAM, Shipp moves to extend the reach of all of his previous musical excursions by putting them all to work on a single recording. And before anyone jumps ...

Painter's Spring songs
$6.89 While most artists merely appreciate the applause of their fans, Russ Freeman and his Rippingtons literally take requests; though they had put out Live in L.A. in 1993, their rabid fans flooded the band's official website with requests for another live date, and this set (recorded in numerous locations throughout the U.S. on 1999's Topaz tour) is the fun-filled result. Several factors make this essential even ...
