Takin' A Chance On Love: The Complete Bluebird Sessions & More album for sale Benny Carter's remarkable career as a musician, composer, arranger, and bandleader had many facets, and spanned an incredible 70 years. Some of the thoroughgoing threads in Carter's work include his superb arrangements for big band and his lively, unerring sense of swing. These qualities are abundant on his late-1930s dates as a leader (most of which were recorded in various cities in Europe), and this collection, the fourth in the Classics chronology of Carter's work from the time, is not to be missed. Given the style and era-specific recording quality, there is an air of nostalgia to these sides, and the highly entertaining "Nagasaki" (which features a rapid-fire, jive-talking vocal from Carter himself) edges toward novelty. But Carter's superb charts for the orchestra display a complexity, subtlety, and energetic interchange reminiscent of Duke Ellington's style. In addition, there is fine playing all around--Carter frequently solos on trumpet and alto sax, while jazz legends like guitarist Django Reinhardt and tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins drop in for sessions (Paris '38 and the Hague '37, respectively). In St. Louis, one such improviser is Willie Akins. Jazzmen in St. Louis have spoken highly of the tenor and soprano saxophonist, although a jazz expert living in Boston or Miami may have never heard of him. Recorded in 1997, Alima is Akins' first album as a leader. This decent, if conventional, hard bop/post-bop effort demonstrates that Akins is heavily influenced by John Coltrane; however, he isn't one of those guys who goes out of his way to emulate him. Akins is definitely his own man; his versions of familiar standards like "Summertime," Jimmy Heath's "CTA," and Sam Rivers' "Beatrice" underscore his appreciation of Coltrane's more lyrical side, although the CD gives the impression that he is also well aware of the contributions of Wayne Shorter, Charles Lloyd, and Hank Mobley. Even though Coltrane's lyricism and intonation have greatly affected Akins, he isn't as aggressive or as intense as Trane could be. Alima isn't remarkable, and it won't win any awards for being groundbreaking. Over time, with the gradual additions of Justin Hughes (Rock*A*Teens), Justin Sias (Elevado), Todd Morrison (Pistolero), and latest member Todd Barnett on saxophone, the band has finally released their debut album "Soni¢mbulo". A mixture of several different Latin-American musical styles all at once, including Tropicalia and Bossa Nova, the group also likes to experiment with genre norms by flirting with psychedelic rock, pop and even adding a little punk and ska edge to the mix for good measure. The band becomes a well-oiled dance machine on this record, with all of the musicians on it very much technically gifted; yet one never overshadows another for center-stage attention. The opening track, "A Menina" brings Arioli's breezy-style of singing, creating the perfect balance with well-timed cymbals, heavy bass lines and intricate guitar. "Corda Bamba" sounds like a song Manu Chao and his crew would easily have put on a future record, with its feet-moving beats and horns. "Soni¢mbulo" overall is a worldly treat, reminding us of how intertwined our cultures really are. It is full of excellent songs, rhythmic vocal and saxophone melodies, and inspired collisions. It leaves you satisfied from this dizzying cocktail of beats and sounds.

You need to dig deep in your soul and relive each part of the story as you write it into the song. Think of a song as a condensed story and you are only going to have 3 to 5 minutes or so to tell everything in that story. Think of a good song as a concentrated form of the story in full strength. You can not water any part of it down to make it have a full effect. This is what I want my music to do, be effective in taking something bad out of your life like a full strength cleaner does to a stain. If you can listen to a song and if it takes something bad away and leaves you feeling good as new then my music just did something good for you. Some say a good song is comforting and I hope my music does just that for you. On this CD, MORE RAW STUFF, the song HOMELESS talks about love and how a house is not a home unless it has love. STEEL RESERVE is about alcohol and is a tribute to the brand 211 STEEL RESERVE that you may be drinking when you lose that love as sometimes folks do to help them heal. Just don't get addicted to it! Enough of the preaching here. ANOTHER WEDDING VOW is about love, that you hope is real love and worth keeping. WILTED FLOWER is about a love gone bad. A PIECE OF PAPER is about the regret of going through a divorce and asks the question about why is a piece of paper running your life. A TIME THAT I LOVED IN VAIN is about giving your love and you find out that you were in love with the wrong person and all you want to do is die but don't really want to die but you do want to kill the pain. I THINK is about getting stabbed in the back by someone you loved. BACKSTAGE BETTY is about temptation in love but knowing it is wrong and you wont do it. THE RIGHT TIME TO LEAVE YOU is about the relationship that is a fatal attraction that you would be better off being out of than in. DICKENS CIDER is a song that is a play on words and sounds like a nasty song if you have a dirty mind or if you really listen to the words you will not be offended. This song is one part joke, one part innuendo, one part jingle and one part love song. It is about something sweet like fresh apple cider grown on the farm where the song takes place. Depending on how you think is how your reaction to the song will be. Not one nasty word is in this song so it is sort of a mind trick and if you get a laugh out of it then so be it. There actually is a brand of the same name in Australia according to a Google search. So let your mind do as it will, please do not be offended if you are offended easily. This is never the intention to offend ever. I usually keep my music G rated for the kids that have become fans of REAL country music. Yes, I have a daughter who listens to my music and my nephews and nieces listen too. I don't want my family being mad at me for making nasty songs. I do not want to get my sisters mad either. They know where I live so I keep it G rated or as close to it as possible. This is my second release after recording with Hank Williams 3 and being featured on The Hank Williams 3 album, Ghost to a Ghost, track #5, entitled RAY LAWRENCE JR..
