| | Stereolab Peng! CD Stereolab Discography of CDs
Originally released in 1992, PENG! is the second full-length album by sonic experimentalists Stereolab. Sometimes jam-packed with thundering keyboards and driving drums, at other times ethereal, airy and light, PENG! captures this thinking man's band at the early stages of its prolific career. Emulating aspects of the Velvet Underground's rhythms as well as the Moog-happy keyboard euphonies of the early 1970s, Stereolab's far left-of-center pop vision has always been something of a love-'em-or-hate-'em proposition.
Longtime fans familiar with the band's later work will find interest in this early recording--it includes the moody, cafe-styled "K-Stars" sung fetchingly in French by Leatitia Sadier. There's also the dry, rub-a-dub guitar of "Perversion," which is more a dissertation over post-modern music than some boring old song: "In our Christian society there's something wrong with having pleasure." Rock 'n' roll!
Recorded in London, England in April 1992.
Personnel: Seaya Sadier (vocals, Moog synthesizer); Tim Gane (guitar, Farfisa, Moog synthesizer); Joe Dilworth (drums).

Peng! album
$8.39 Stereolab have always been fascinated with a wide range of textures, which, under their special care, come together in a droney, poppy, spacey sound all their own. In their hands, the monotony of mid-'70s Krautrock, the hi-fi effects of so-called space-age bachelor-pad music (strings, eccentric harmonies, odd studio sounds), and the simplicity of the Velvet Underground's dark pop combine into a mighty monolith that pushes popular music's borders, while making heads sway in teeny-bopperish glee.
EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP adds a bit of funk to Stereolab's system, making the monolith swing in directions only hinted at previously. "Metronomic Underground," for instance, builds a series of mysterious grooves over its eight-minute span; it's as structured as the title implies, and as smoky as the French cafes Laetitia Sadier's vocals evoke. But the discovery of the groove is only one of Stereolab's newfound pleasures. The ...
| | Stereolab Dots And Loops CD (1997)
Peng! CD music
$9.29 Is the sound of Stereolab's Moogs, electric keyboards, and strummed guitars starting to infiltrate mainstream pop? Or is the band itself getting continually better at its electronic bubblegum grooves? Whatever the reason, each Stereolab album is that much catchier than the one before. The music arrives sounding like it's been in your head for years. And some of it may well have been: the occasional trumpet blasts might as well have come from an old Beach Boys album.
While the Beach Boys made their mark by topping their lush pop with words of sadness and disillusionment, Stereolab graces a warm analog pulse with soft-but-icy female vocals (in French and English) that comment on stagnation, aimlessness and the pointlessness of capitalist life. "Brakhage" finds that voice repeating "We need so damn/Many things/To keep our stupid/Lives going" over what may be the happiest pop groove in history. On "The Flower Called Nowhere" Stereolab sings of "the stagnant mass" in between chipper interjections ...
| | Stereolab Groop Played "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" CD (1993) Reissue
Peng! music CDs
$10.15 Released in 1993, nearly two years before the smirky lounge revival made "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" (a phrase most often attributed to journalist Byron Coley to describe Esquivel and similar '50s artists) common hipster currency, this EP has little in common with Esquivel or Martin Denny. Humorously divided into "EZ Listening" and "New Wave" sides, THE GROOP... is Stereolab's most experimental work, featuring ...

Peng! songs
$9.89 After 1997's IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER made them critics' darlings, Scottish octet Belle And Sebastian ran straight into a series of label woes, and into the inevitable feeding frenzy that surrounds a free agent with their prodigious talents. Their experience with one label exec is detailed in "Seymour Stein" on THE BOY WITH THE ARAB STRAP, which finds the band building on the pastoral pop charms of SINISTER, ...

| | Shakin Stevens Collection CD (2005) With DVD; Pal0
Peng! album
$23.29 This is a 36-track CD/DVD combo of hits by British rockabilly revivalist Shakin' Stevens, including "This Ole House" and "Love Worth Waiting For."
While there may not be many Shakin Stevens fans left here at the dawn of the 21st century, there are perhaps enough to take great delight in this double-disc set that collects the British rockabilly artist's many singles -- there are 24 cuts on the CD -- and also includes a live performance DVD. Stevens burst onto the scene at the dawn of the 1980s performing a roots rock style that was in fact both dated and timeless. His readings of Dave Alvin's classic "Marie, Marie" (right after the Blasters' version tanked) and Stuart Hamblen's "This Ole House" became nearly definitive versions as he used his '50s warble combined with a full and rich baritone. Stevens could sing country, blues, R&B, and (of course) rockabilly with equal acumen, as this excellent collection bears out. There have been many compilations over the years, but none ...
