Originally released in 1992, PENG! is the second full-length album by sonic experimentalists Stereolab. Sometimes jam-packed with thundering keyboards and driving drums, at other times ethereal, airy and light, PENG! captures this thinking man's band at the early stages of its prolific career. Emulating aspects of the Velvet Underground's rhythms as well as the Moog-happy keyboard euphonies of the early 1970s, Stereolab's far left-of-center pop vision has always been something of a love-'em-or-hate-'em proposition.
Longtime fans familiar with the band's later work will find interest in this early recording--it includes the moody, cafe-styled "K-Stars" sung fetchingly in French by Leatitia Sadier. There's also the dry, rub-a-dub guitar of "Perversion," which is more a dissertation over post-modern music than some boring old song: "In our Christian society there's something wrong with having pleasure." Rock 'n' roll!

Stereolab have always been fascinated with a wide range of textures, which, under their special care, come together in a droney, poppy, spacey sound all their own. In their hands, the monotony of mid-'70s Krautrock, the hi-fi effects of so-called space-age bachelor-pad music (strings, eccentric harmonies, odd studio sounds), and the simplicity of the Velvet Underground's dark pop combine into a mighty monolith that pushes popular music's borders, while making heads sway in teeny-bopperish glee.
EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP adds a bit of funk to Stereolab's system, making the monolith swing in directions only hinted at previously. Is the sound of Stereolab's Moogs, electric keyboards, and strummed guitars starting to infiltrate mainstream pop? This is a 36-track CD/DVD combo of hits by British rockabilly revivalist Shakin' Stevens, including "This Ole House" and "Love Worth Waiting For."
While there may not be many Shakin Stevens fans left here at the dawn of the 21st century, there are perhaps enough to take great delight in this double-disc set that collects the British rockabilly artist's many singles -- there are 24 cuts on the CD -- and also includes a live performance DVD. Stevens burst onto the scene at the dawn of the 1980s performing a roots rock style that was in fact both dated and timeless.
