| | Hayley Westenra Winter Magic CD (2009)
Bruckner: Symphony No. 9
$12.64 A magical collection of Christmas songs from the 22 year old singing phenomenon that is Hayley Westenra. Winter Magic combines some of the best loved and most familiar seasonal carols such as 'Silent Night' and 'Coventry Carol' with popular Christmas songs 'Little Drummer Boy' and 'Sleigh Ride', as well as tracks Hayley has written herself ( Peace Shall Come, All With You and Christmas Morning). The variety of the song choices perfectly showcases the versatility of Hayley's angelic voice and her ability to not only perform in a beautiful, classical way (Corpus Christi Carol) but also in a considerably more 'pop' style (Peace Shall Come). Hayley released her first album 'Pure' at the age of 16 and it was soon on the way to becoming the fastest-selling debut album from a classical artist, and reached the Top 10 of the pop charts in 11 countries. Her albums have sold more than four million copies worldwide to date. 'Pure' was certified by the official UK chart compilers as the best selling classical album of the 21st Century. True to form, Hayley has once again produced an irresistible record which is guaranteed to make everyone's Christmas that little bit more magical.

| | From Mao To Mozart - Isaac Stern In China DVD (1980)
Bruckner: Symphony No. 9
$14.29 In 1979, as China reopened its doors to the west, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. While in China, Stern performed concerts and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This classic documentary records this extraordinary cultural exchange. Stern and David Golub, the pianist who accompanied him, narrate part of the film, while Tan Shuzhen, a deputy director of the Chinese Conservatory of Music, provides a different and complementary perspective on Chinese culture. In addition to the reissue of the acclaimed documentary which captured this significant event (and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary while doing it,) this video also contains the newer film MUSICAL ENCOUNTERS. This tracks Stern as he returns to China, twenty years later, and catches up with his old students, many of whom are masterful musicians in their own right.
This 115 minute DVD features not only the re-issue of Stern's great documentary visit to China, but also the new film "MUsical Encounters", made twenty years after the original, in which Stern returns to China and finds that the children he once taught have turned into master musicians in their own right. The original film is about Stern's invited visit to China, shortly after the Cultural Revolution, which attempted to wipe out all of the Western influences on Chinese cultural life. Stern visits a music conservatory, hears and coaches young musicians and talks to professors about their troubles under the Cultural Revolution. The DVD includes "Gentleman From Shanghai."
| | An An Evening With Il Divo: Live In Barcelona CDs (2009) With DVD
Bruckner: Symphony No. 9
$15.17 A live performance available as either a BluRay or a DVD/CD set, Live in Barcelona captures Il Divo's April 3, 2009, performance at Palau Sant Jordi. The video portions contain the complete 24-track performance; the CD is a truncated ten-cut sampler, designed as a bonus rather than the main attraction. That main attraction is the extravaganza captured on video, where the operatic quartet runs through all manners of pop standards -- "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Unbreak My Heart," "Nights in White Satin," "The Winner Takes It All," "My Way," "The Impossible Dream" -- sometimes translating the lyrics out of English so they feel more like opera. Naturally, this live set won't convince doubters, but those who have loved any of the group's five studio albums will find this a satisfying spectacle.

Dear John,I am writing to compliment you on the wonderful delivery of the most peaceful, tranquil and beautiful version of Christmas carols I have heard in a long time.I was given a copy some weeks before Christmas and was so thrilled and delighted to hear it. It is so "listenable" and after a hard day's work I found it wonderful to slow the pace without feeling the commercialisation of Christmas from this production. Well done to you, a great achievement! I will definitely be giving copies to my friends and encouraging them to buy for their friends! Many thanks, TheresaThis CD from lyre maestro John Billing is a splendid piece of work! When I first heard it I felt as though lit up within by the clarity and warmth of the sound and the fresh ring that is brought to many old favourites as well as some lovely new surprises. John has here assembled a fine array of instruments to wonderful effect. The CD itself is a production of the highest quality with the special bonus of some stunning artwork! Altogether a joy to behold!review by J. Nixon, Holywood, County Down.
