The reissue of THE ETHEREAL MIRROR is part of RED's Welcome Home campaign and includes previously unreleased tracks. Cathedral: Lee Dorrian (vocals); Adam Lehan (acoustic & electric guitars, 12-string guitar); Garry Jennings (acoustic & 12-string guitars, bass); Mark Ramsey Wharton (drums). Recorded at The Manor Studios, Oxford, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Cathedral's second full-length album, The Ethereal Mirror, finds the group experimenting a bit with new sounds on their path to discovering the patented sound they would polish on succeeding releases. Hints of their lumbering doom sound from Forest of Equilibrium characterize songs such as "Phantasmagoria," but for the most part Cathedral picks up the pace and instills a welcome sense of groove into their monolithic guitar riffs. Two songs from the album in particular stand out due to their up-beat tempos: the anthemic opener, "Ride," and the metal-disco of "Midnight Mountain." These two songs aren't up-tempo in the sense of death metal or grindcore, but they actually owe a lot to late '60s and early '70s hard rock anthems such as Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" and Black Sabbath's "Supernaut." Singer/lyricist Lee Dorrian's background as a member of the U.K.'s grindcore movement in the late '80s and the ultra-heavy guitar tones of the group elevates songs such as "Ride" above generic proto-heavy metal recycling. Dorrian's voice sounds unlike traditional rock vocalists as he tries his best to sing despite the grave darkness remaining from his past as a growling madman in Napalm Death. Furthermore, his lyrics feature more fairytale-inspired nightmarish qualities than Ozzy Osbourne ever came close to writing. But for as important as Dorrian is to Cathedral as their undeniable leader, the epic guitar riff-laden soundscapes of Garry Jennings and Adam Lehan drive these songs and set perfectly gloomy moods for Dorrian's black magic poetry. ~ Jason Birchmeier Cathedral Ethereal Mirror Songs Ethereal Mirror Music Review Purchase Ethereal Mirror CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Metal Church CD (1985)

$7.55 Much like the English punk movement before it, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal invaded hundreds of American garages in the early '80s and launched countless bands across the nation. It is interesting to note, however, that while in major cities with thriving punk rock this phenomenon manifested itself in the form of thrash metal (for example, L.A.'s Metallica, New York's Anthrax), in secondary ...

| | GTR CD (1986) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve; Canada
Ethereal Mirror
$41.09 GTR: Max Bacon (vocals); Steve Hackett, Steve Howe (guitar, keyboards); Phil Spalding (bass); Jonathan Mover (drums, percussion). Recorded at Townhouse Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Stephen Thomas Erlewine. Most supergroups don't last long, and GTR was no exception to the rule. Steve Hackett and Steve Howe -- lead guitarists for the prime periods of Genesis and Yes, respectively -- formed the band in 1986, not with the intention of reviving classic prog rock, but with the idea of making a stadium-shaking hard rock band. It was two veterans with very clear musical identities of their own, teamed with a trio of supporting musicians eager for a big break. Not the ideal formula for a perfect rock album, since the scales were already tipped toward one side as the recording began. And, GTR's lone eponymous album didn't deliver the fireworks that Howe and Hackett fans desired. Part of the problem is that the two guitarists crowd each other out; it rarely sounds like they're trading licks, but rather like they're stepping ...
