In the late '70s and early '80s, it wasn't uncommon to find punk bands that were enamored of '50s and early '60s rock & roll. The Clash covered the Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought the Law," and the Ramones were well aware of the contributions of pioneers like Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley -- not to mention the girl groups, surf rockers and garage bands that emerged in the 1960s. Although Tiger Army wasn't formed until 1995, its work has recalled a time when punk bands showed their affection for early rock & roll. Released in 1999, this self-titled debut album is full of rockabilly influences -- the material is aggressive punk, but aggressive punk that owes a lot to rockabilly. And that's ironic because the Generation X-ers who comprise Tiger Army are young enough to be Jerry Lee Lewis' grandchildren. No one can accuse this band of lacking a sense of humor; many of the lyrics are funny in an irreverent, twisted sort of way. One of the things that Tiger Army finds amusing is the supernatural; "Devil Girl," "Trance," and "Werecat" (which is about a frightening beast that's half man and half cat) give the impression that singer Nick 13 (who wrote most of the songs) has spent a lot of time watching campy 1950s horror movies. Meanwhile, Tiger Army has some fun with country/Western themes on "Outlaw Heart," which uses a pedal steel guitar and almost sounds like a combination of punk and Marty Robbins. Tiger Army's first album falls short of remarkable, but the tunes are generally fun and catchy -- and Nick 13's irreverent sense of humor is a definite plus. ~ Alex Henderson

Perhaps the best album to emerge from the quagmire that was early-'80s California hardcore punk, the visceral, intensely physical presence of Damaged has yet to be equaled, although many bands have tried. Although Black Flag had been recording for three years prior to this release, the fact that Henry Rollins was now their lead singer made all the difference. His furious bellow and barely contained ferocity was the missing piece the band needed to become great. Also, guitarist/mastermind Greg Ginn wrote a slew of great songs for this record that, while suffused with the usual punk conceits (alienation, boredom, disenfranchisement), were capable of making one laugh out loud, especially the protoslacker satire "TV Party." Extremely controversial when it was released, Damaged endured the slings and arrows of outrageous criticism (some reacted as though this record alone would cause the fall of America's youth) to become and remain an important document of its time. ~ John Dougan

Return of the Loving Dead is the fifth studio album from the horror punk combo Nekromantix. Despite the clever title and funny band name, that is about as good as the album gets. With a lot of references to older horror films and ghoulish activities, one would expect crazier music out of this bunch. But no, instead they sound all the world like Reverend Horton Heat, without Heat's psychotic drive. The band knows the general sound they are going for, but the album never quite gets there, sounding a little too serious for their own good. Except for the lyrics, they do not try and flaunt their gimmick the way a band like the Cramps does. Because of this, they come off as entirely too straight-faced, and the joke lyrics are hidden under the rockabilly guitars. Only a few songs really live up to their titles, and even those songs ...

Culled from Tiger Army's back catalog of unreleased songs and early demo outtakes (predating the band's affiliation with Hellcat Records), The Early Years is a reissue aimed at satisfying fans of the band seeking to complete their collections, rather than aimed at attracting new fans to the fold. The songs contained on Early Years are all serviceable rockabilly/punkabilly numbers, but they lack any real power or direction and are pretty forgettable as a result. Tiger Army's anthemic "Jungle Cat" is full of lines like, "Don't step on my tiger tail/I'll rip your guts out" and rallying cries of "let's prowl," and, not surprisingly, it comes across as being more than a little cheesy. The band often bears more than just a passing resemblance to the Stray Cats (musically), but the difference between the two groups is that the Stray Cats were the whole package. Sure, the Cats had their own silly kitty anthem ("Stray Cat Strut"), but Brian Setzer and the boys had the attitude and the chops to back it up. "American Nightmare" finds the band giving that Misfits track the rockabilly treatment, while "F.T.W." (which stands for "f*ck the world," yawn) has Tiger Army posturing as tough-as-nails street punks rather than swaggering rockabilly hepsters. With ham-fisted lyrics like, "Everyday this ...

Just as they did with 2001's II: Power of Moonlite, Tiger Army begin III: Ghost Tigers Rise with a brief, mood-setting prelude. The move establishes spiritual leader Nick 13's music in a world outside our own, in a silvery place somewhere between celluloid and the supernatural. Some operators in the genre get caught up in their own stylism -- all that talk about ghouls and gore over slap bass and recast punk chording atrophies into one enormous (and enormously dull) song. But Tiger Army are different. First of all, Nick 13 can sing. He pours bitterness and yearning into the melody of "Santa Clara Twilight" -- it ends up sounding like Del Shannon fronting a rockabilly version of Social Distortion. "Through the Darkness" and "Rose of the Devil's Garden," too, expand psychobilly's traditional aesthetic borders with vocal harmonies and interesting changes -- in short, Tiger Army write songs, not generic genre product. "Ghost Tigers," the distorted-vocal rave-up "Swift Silent Deadly," "Atomic," and especially "What Happened?" land on the band's harder side. Psychobilly. By its very name it's a kick in the pants, an emphatic wallop that metes out harmony between the greasers and punks by the thrum of standup bass. HorrorPops made a real impression with Hell Yeah, their Epitaph debut, and 2005's Bring It On! also delivers soundly. The band never gets carried away with establishing a rabid, rapid pace, or the genre's obsession with grabby ghouls and pools of blood. That stuff's in there, but it's cut with Patricia Day's endearing "girl group gone a little bad" lead vocals and dynamic songwriting that finds the most effective way to combine rockabilly thump with punk swagger, instead of the most obvious one. And HorrorPops aren't two-dimensional. While the cleverly self-referential stance of the Ramones and the Misfits forever lurks like a comforting shadow in the backgrounds of Bring It On!, "Hit 'n' Run" sounds like nothing less than an outtake from No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom and "Caught in a Blonde" is pretty straight-on punk revival. Vocalist, composer, guitarist and bass player Dorian Mingus has been recording and performing his original compositions for many years. His third CD, "Detriment of a fantasy" has just been released. Raised in the Bay Area, and son of renowned jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, Dorian began playing the guitar at the age of ten. He had a facility for reading music, but found he preferred creating his own songs and picking out tunes popular in the sixties, especially those of the Beatles. Early influences in his career were Jimi Hendrix, John Cippolina of Quicksilver, David Gilmore from Pink Floyd, Richie Blackmoore from Deep Purple, Eric Clapton, Santana, and Billy Gibbons form ZZ top. Bass Influences Paul Mcartney and John Entwistle being his top two amongst many others.Struggling with his father's fame, Dorian resisted a career in music for quite some time, and focused instead on the visual arts. He has since embraced his heritage and his talent, and is deep in the exploration of diverse tempos, intertwining different genres of music, while still using the energies of rock and funk. The idea, Dorian says, "Is to stay cool and modern."Dorian has experienced enough of life, its challenges, its suffering, and joy to give his music heartfelt meaning. He now views his father's music not as a barometer of his own talent,but as a unique legacy and part of the eternal flow.

Grails' second full-length album seems to be influenced by one or more of its members moonlighting in Jackie-O Motherfucker, namely in its appropriation of dirge-like "traditionals" (or at least what sound like folk spirituals) and elaboration of them in a post-rock context. Or perhaps there's just something in the water in Portland, Oregon. Grails' modus operandi on Redlight is to start most tracks with barely there frameworks then slow-build to epiphanic climax and dissolve back into the red-earth clay from which each was spawned. The focal point of violin and guitar from Grails' first album is still intact, but the sound on Redlight is expanded with saxophone (which, when combined with turntable as it is on "Worksong," pulls a page straight from the Jackie-O songbook) and pedal steel, among other instruments. "The Volunteer" is the showcase here with its crawl toward the epic dynamics of a shimmering guitar and moaning sax crescendo. "High & Low" has a plucky junkyard shuffle reminiscent of mid-period Tom Waits, which drops away for a duet of poignant piano and soaring strings.
