| | Freddie Hubbard Blue Spirits CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Paris Jazz Concert 1965, Vol. 1 songs
$8.45 This excellent 1966 set features a diverse range of ensembles, all lead by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. The first is an octet, featuring congas and a euphonium; the second, a seven-member group, including the great McCoy Tyner on piano; the third is a sextet that boasts drummer Elvin Jones and Herbie Hancock (who doubles on piano and celeste). James Spaulding lends his alto sax and flute to two of the groups, and Joe Henderson is in two as well (his melodic, yet adventurous, tenor sax playing is especially notable). Also featured are tenor player Hank Mobley, bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Harold Mabern, and drummer Pete La Roca.
The fare on BLUE SPIRITS is in keeping with the hard bop of the era. A heavy soul-jazz influence is heard on the opening "Soul Surge" and the Latin-tinged "Cunga Black," but Hubbard's work is always challenging ...

| | Jon Gordon Contrasts CD (2001)
Paris Jazz Concert 1965, Vol. 1 CD music
$12.89 It is no exaggeration to say that saxophonist Jon Gordon and pianist Bill Charlap are two of the finest musicians of their generation; both have a strong link to Phil Woods -- Gordon studied with the alto sax master and has recorded with him, while Charlap began serving as Woods' regular pianist. The final connection is that Woods produced the sessions that resulted in this outstanding collection of duets. The two musicians have played together frequently since attending the same high school, and their familiarity with one another helps each of them in anticipating where the other is likely to go. Although Gordon is best known for his work on alto sax (he won the Thelonious Monk alto sax competition) he begins on soprano sax for a sterling interpretation of "Stardust." Gordon's swaggering alto sax solo on "Young at Heart" is supported by Charlap's imaginative supporting lines. The studio sessions also include strong interpretations of standards like "These Foolish Things," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," and "Over the Rainbow." In addition ...
| | Parasol's Sweet Sixteen, Vol. 7 CD (2003)
Paris Jazz Concert 1965, Vol. 1 music CDs
$7.99 Weighing in at 22 tracks strong, this is essentially a compilation of songs appearing on the Parasol/Hidden Agenda/Reaction/Mud/Spur family of labels. A couple of tracks (by the Wannadies and Moonbabies) were drawn from CDs that were "forthcoming" at the time this anthology was issued, and a couple of other songs (Måns Wieslander's "Make Up" and Kevin Tihista's Red Terror's "Missing You") appear only on this comp. Otherwise, though, it's a wide-ranging label sampler, without much uniting the selections save the companies to which the artists were signed (though the geographical span is quite wide, encompassing Belgium, Sweden, the U.K., the U.S., Australia, and Holland). Broadly speaking, however, most of these fall toward the lighter shade of indie pop, with varying spices of alt-country, singer/songwriter folk-rock, good-time harmony-oriented tunes, electro-pop, and power pop given a rotating spotlight. That makes it pretty acceptable listening, and good fodder for something obscure to add to a college radio play list, ...

| | Linteau, Larry & The Southern Gentlemen Traditions & Legends CD (2006)
Paris Jazz Concert 1965, Vol. 1 music CDs
$10.59 Welcome to the Southern Gentlemen web page. The specific purpose of this particular page is to give you some background information on Larry Linteau . First off, Larry was brought the forefront of jazz performance by way of the great Percy Payne and the legendary Marvin "Smitty" Smith Sr. on the northshore of Chicago. The band was the Jazz Brothers and they operated up and down the northshore corridor. Through these gentlemen, Larry was exposed to many of the great players of our time, (i.e Monty Alexander, Smitty Jr. and a host of national and internationally known jazz stars. Larry began his professional music career the way most modern players get into the business, he played and still plays some cover tunes. At the time, Funkadelics, James Brown and the likes were some of the hottest groups out. Many times various bands he was in performed as opening acts for these ...
