Tuneful without being soft, confident without being pompous, hip without being inaccesible, CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN was a huge leap for Pavement up the rock & roll evolution cycle. They may have gained some pop smarts, but a casual listen to the dissonant guitar solo of "Cut Your Hair" proves that the seeds planted with 1989's first SLAY TRACKS EP have come to their logical fruition.

Stephen Malkmus and co. created an album that neither short-changed their status as prominent indie noise-makers, nor stunted their growth as a musical ensemble. Thus, though the inspired eccentricity is toned down--an instrumental tribute to fellow Stockton-ite Dave Brubeck being the closest thing to their early quirkiness--this is the most consistent set of stubbornly catchy songs ever. From the odd tunings and drunken AC/DC riffing of "Silence Kit"--with its somber lyric of leaving the urban life behind--to the epic closing of "Fillmore Jive"--which begs us to say "good night to the rock & roll era"--CROOKED RAIN is an album of short stories, full of irony, wit, and hooks.

4 stars darling don't you go and cut your hair....
I can't say Crooked Rain Crooked Rain is a bad album. It features classic songs such as "Cut Your Hair" "Gold Soundz" "Range Life", its all good stuff...but then again all of Pavements album are up there.Crooked Rain *2 probably does not reveal anything new though, unlike all other Pavements albums. If you want to discover the band, I don't recommend this ablum in the first place.First get Wowee Zowee and/or Slanted And Enchanted, then Brighten The Corners and Terror Twilight then Crooked Rain Crooked Rain.

4 stars stronger wilder prouder
The difference between "Slanted And Enchanted" and "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain" is obvious. By the time "Slanted.." had hit the spot, Pavement had strengthened their sound so that "Cut Your Hair" could become the anti-alternative anthem and hence "Crooked Rain.." could position itself in 1994 where anything could happen, anyone could be the new breakout rock band. For Pavement, instead of competing with the rest of the market their idea is to be even more caustic, more satirical, and give this as an icon to their music.Criticize the alternative rock scene because after all its nothing. The pointless "Stop Breathing", the childish "Unfair", the ironic piano jazzy interlude, the OlMcDonald-had-a farm "Range Life", all these songs have a purpose: make the listener feel as if rock dwells in wild nonsense and "Crooked Rain.." may have an immature feel to it with Pavements "let's be in/let's be out" attitude, but it still is a damn good album.
