| | Yo La Tengo Ride The Tiger CD Yo La Tengo Discography of CDs
The debut release by Yo La Tengo captures the group in their most raw and ragged incarnation. Guitarist Kaplan was working as a sound-man and rock critic when his basement jam sessions with his drummer girlfriend Georgia Hubley (later wife) inspired him to get a band together. The inner sleeve includes the original ads they placed in the Village Voice looking for a guitarist and bassist whose influences included Love and Mission of Burma. While these influences are certainly present in these 15 songs, the most obvious influence is that of the Velvet Underground. Kaplan's speak-singing style of vocalization, the scratchy rhythm guitar and the solid, minimal drumming all recall the Velvets aesthetic.
Produced with stark minimalism by former Mission of Burma bassist Clint Conly, RIDE THE TIGER consists mainly of straightforward, yet edgy rockers like "The Cone of Silence," although "Alrock's Blues" goes in some unexpected directions. "The Empty Pool" recalls the jangle and jungle beat of the Feelies, another New Jersey outfit from the same era. High points are the group's first single, a fierce version of "A House is Not a Motel" from Love's immortal FOREVER CHANGES, and a cover of the Kinks' "Big Sky."

Ride The Tiger CD music
$15.19 Philadelphia labels have never been known for putting out a surplus of country. Over the years, a lot of jazz, R&B, rock, hip-hop, and dance music has been recorded by Philly labels. But as a rule, Philadelphia's A&R people tended to assume that they should leave country to the folks in Nashville. One exception came in 1999, when Record Cellar (a small indie based in Philly suburb of Bala Cynwyd) signed the Berks Country, PA, outfit Frog Holler. Adams Hotel Road, the band's first album for Record Cellar and second album overall, isn't pure or traditional country -- some of it is alternative country-rock/No Depression, some of it is Americana. But in terms of lyrical content, the CD is very country. It's been said that if hip-hop is, as Chuck D put it, "The CNN of the streets," country is the CNN of suburbia and small-town America -- and Frog Holler can tell you a lot about that environment. Adams Hotel Road paints a bittersweet picture of life in the small towns of Pennsylvania. Many of the songs are melancholy, and lead vocalist Darren Schlappich (who handles most of the writing) doesn't hesitate to tell you about dead-end jobs and dead-end relationships. Nonetheless, Frog Holler's affection for Berks County comes through -- when all is said ...

| | Tsunami Bomb Ultimate Escape CD (2002)
Ride The Tiger CD music
$11.59 Tsunami Bomb has shortened the fuse for its first full-length on Kung Fu, hacking off the keyboards that marred 2001's Invasion from Within and concentrating instead on uncoiling Agent M's explosive vocal presence over an album's worth of boisterous brass-knuckles California pop-punk. While it offers much more than head-rush instant gratification, Ultimate Escape's initial salvo is quite formidable. "Russian Roulette" douses its Andrews Sisters-style vocal harmonies in a punk rock solvent worthy of the Turbo A.C.'s, and establishes a fun, freewheeling call-and-response vocal style between the beguiling M and her band of dudes. The same sound dresses up the raggedy new wave tour van anthem "Roundabout," and also saves "Top 40 Hit" from crossing the median into cliché. The latter song's anti-corporate message rant is admirable (and true), but its vicious hardcore riffing might have been better served without the baggage. But that's a minor misstep on a record full of face-punching riffs and vocal hooks that just beg to be shouted at shows. "20 Going On...," "Headlights on a Hand Grenade," and triumphant, pogo-worthy closer "In This Together" are all standouts -- the latter might feature one of M's most powerful lyrics. "I can't even convey how safe I am (when you're around me)," she sings, and it becomes as much a dedication to a partner as it is a thank you to the fans. That's probably the greatest thing about Tsunami Bomb and Ultimate Escape -- the band's joy at playing is infectious, inherent, and totally ridiculous. It pushes their music past generalized comparisons to Green Day or any rock band that was ever fronted by a woman, and makes their record something more than another series of anthems and chord changes -- it's an escape from the mundane ...
| | Moody Blues Lovely To See You: Live CDs (2005)
Ride The Tiger music CDs
$13.89 This concert album contains several surprises, not the least of which is its existence -- it's the third issued by the Moody Blues since the late 1980s. But it's also unique, featuring the band by itself, unaccompanied; all of their concert recordings since the 1979 issue of Caught Live + 5 -- which contained a 1960s concert -- have offered the group backed up by orchestras of varying sizes, which made for impressive sonics but reduced the spontaneity and raw excitement that should be inherent in a rock concert. The group, now a core trio of guitarist/singer Justin Hayward, bassist/guitarist/singer John Lodge, and drummer/singer Graeme Edge, with second percussionist Gordon Marshall, keyboardist Paul Bliss, keyboard player/backing singer Bernie Barlow, and flautist Norda Mullen (replacing retired founding member Ray Thomas). It's nice to know that Hayward and Lodge ...
