MORE JOY, LESS SHAME contains live, remixed or alternate versions of material from DILATE and ANI DIFRANCO.
When Ani DiFranco's seventh album, DILATE, came out in 1996, some longtime admirers of the singer/songwriter were puzzled by one track, a trip-hop-inspired, beat-heavy keyboard rendition of "Amazing Grace." In what some saw as a deliberate tweaking of the expectations of folk traditionalists, DiFranco quickly released the MORE JOY, LESS SHAME remix EP.
DILATE's wonderful "Joyful Girl" is the disc's centerpiece track. With the help of a sampler and the coolly funky bass of ex-Gang of Four member Sara Lee, DiFranco turns the piece into the dancefloor-ready "Joyful Girl (Danger and Uncertainty Mix)" and into two trippier versions ("Joyful Girl (Peace and Love Mix)" and "Joyful Girl (Peace and Love Extended Mix)"). The song adapts brilliantly to new surroundings, as exemplified by the even more astonishing live version recorded with Doc Severinson and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The EP concludes with a live take of "Both Hands," a track from DiFranco's debut album.
Personnel: Ani DiFranco (vocals, acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, samples); Doc Severinsen (conductor); Sara Lee (bass); Andy Stochansky (drums); The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

More Joy, Less Shame
$9.09 On her first two albums, ANI DIFRANCO and NOT SO SOFT, young Buffalo, New York native Ani DiFranco was a woman alone with her acoustic guitar. She cut through the "sensitive folkie" cliche with punk-inspired intensity and a rhythmic ferocity that had at least as much in common with early Elvis Costello as it owed to early Joni Mitchell.
On 1992's IMPERFECTLY, her exceptional third album, DiFranco wisely expands her musical palette. She adds drummer Andy Stochansky (her only constant collaborator from this album onward), an electric bassist, and subtle washes of electric guitar, mandolin, and trumpet to her smartly rendered folk-punk songs. The most inspired musical contribution is the viola solo by Mary Ramsey (10,000 Maniacs, John and Mary) on the Lisa Germano-like "Served Faithfully." The album opens with the stunning "What If No One's Watching?" ...
| | Ani Difranco Puddle Dive CD (1993)
More Joy, Less Shame
$8.75 As she was not yet 20 when her self-titled debut was released, Ani DiFranco largely grew up in public. From the stark beauty of ANI DIFRANCO and the impassioned politics of NOT SO SOFT to the tentative steps into full-band folk-rock of IMPERFECTLY, each album was a marked improvement on the one before. Her fourth record, 1993's PUDDLE DIVE, is the Buffalo, New York-based singer-songwriter's first genuinely great album.
PUDDLE DIVE contains DiFranco's strongest songwriting up to that point. The sardonic "Egos Like Hairdos" and the ominously quiet "I Could Do That Any Day" remain career highlights. The album also finds DiFranco growing more and more comfortable with autobiographical songwriting, most tellingly on the outstanding "Used to You," a compelling collection of mixed emotions directed at a former lover and still one of DiFranco' strongest and most emotionally rich songs.
Recorded at International Sound, Buffalo, New York in 1993.

| | Lacuna Coil In A Reverie CD (1999)
More Joy, Less Shame
$13.85 On its 1999 full-length debut, IN A REVERIE, the Italian goth-metal ensemble Lacuna Coil offers up a melodic yet moody set of songs that prefigures the successful formula of Arkansas's Evanescence by years. While the group features both male and female vocalists, singer Cristina Scabbia often steals the show with her expressive voice, which is equally effective on amped-up, guitar-driven tunes ("My Wings") and orchestral, pop-tinged numbers ("To Myself I Turned"). Although ...
| | Lacuna Coil Unleashed Memories CD (2001)
More Joy, Less Shame
$12.85 Lacuna Coil's second full-length album successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. While vocalist Cristina Scabbia gives the band their sonic calling card, additional vocals from the group's male singer, Andrea Ferro, add tonal variety and balance. Rarely succumbing to heavy-handedness, Lacuna Coil escapes the stylistic straitjacket of the goth/metal formula, making them more accessible than many of their peers. The special-edition release includes the band's Halflife EP as an added bonus. ~ Andy Hinds

| | Lacuna Coil Comalies CD (2002)
More Joy, Less Shame
$12.79 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative genre is the band's ability to dabble with ethereal dynamics. Such is the case with the soaring title cut and equally potent "The Ghost Woman and the Hunter," both of which blend neo-classical riffing, swirling synth runs and a perfect juxtaposition of light and heavy vocal phrasing. To commemorate the group's Ozzfest 2004 stint, COMALIES was re-released with a bonus disc featuring nine cuts that include a mix of live and studio acoustic performances, along with videos for "Heaven's a Lie" and "Swamped."
U.S. edition of the Italian goth rock act's third album includes enhanced video track 'The Making of Coma Lies'. Century Media. 2002.
