ODETTA SINGS BALLADS AND BLUES sounds as remarkable today as it did upon its first release in 1956, as if Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith, and Leadbelly had combined into one voice. Singing in a pure yet husky, classically trained voice, accompanying herself on simple but never simplistic acoustic guitar, Odetta was a major force in the collegiate folk and blues revival of the '50s. Unfortunately, she became so thoroughly identified with that audience that her work has sometimes been dismissed, or merely forgotten, in the decades since.
This excellent reissue, with remastered sound and extensive liner notes, of ODETTA SINGS BALLADS AND BLUES goes a long way toward showing what folly this is. No female folk singer of the era had a more beautiful and expressive voice than Odetta, and her choice of material--heavy on pointed work songs and spirituals but never smugly sanctimonious--was simply exquisite.
Includes original release liner notes by Dean Gitter.

| | Stevie Ray Vaughan In Step CD (1989)
Sings Ballads And Blues songs
$7.59 This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not on the original release.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
The irony of 1989's IN STEP lay in the fact that after rebounding from a terrible drug problem, Stevie Ray Vaughan had his new lease on life cut short by a helicopter crash the following year. The record itself features some of Vaughan's most inspired playing and Double Trouble has rarely sounded better. Songs such as "Crossfire," "Wall Of Denial" and "Tightrope" alluded to Vaughan's personal problems with just the right amount of optimism and scathing guitar thrown in for good measure. Blues influences abound whether it's a rollicking cover of Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby," a smoldering reading of Buddy Guy's "Leave My Girl Alone" or an upbeat take on Howlin' Wolf's "Love Me Darlin'."
For all his skill as an interpreter of other people's songs, Stevie Ray Vaughan's originals are just as solid. Of particular note here are the instrumentals "Travis Walk" and "Riviera Paradise." ...
| | Johnny Dyani Mbizo CD (1981) (Import) Import; Denmark
Sings Ballads And Blues album
$20.15 A live quartet date, Mbizo has the nice, relaxed feel of a warm concert in an intimate setting with the musicians at liberty to stretch out as they please. The final piece is a dedication to Charles Mingus and there's a similar vibe to records like Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus with Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson, albeit perhaps not up to that stellar level. The songs vary from lively burners like ...

| | Max Romeo War Ina Babylon CD (1976) Import
Sings Ballads And Blues music CDs
$15.15 Many of reggae artist Max Romeo's songs on WAR INA BABYLON were co-written by producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. Tracks include "Chase the Devil" and "Stealing In the Name of Jah."
In the early-70's, rude boy Max Romeo shifted his lyrical focus from adolescent sex songs, like his 1968 hit "Wet Dream," to more mature Rastafarian themes. Few imagined that this Rudie would one day record definitive Rasta anthems, but Romeo proved all doubters wrong with the 1976 release of WAR INA BABYLON.
An important ingredient to the enduring quality of the record lies in the contribution of producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band, The Upsetters. They provide chilling and powerful rhythms seasoned with the usual Perry studio genius--notice, especially, the staccato ...
| | Barry Goldberg Stoned Again CD (2002)
Sings Ballads And Blues songs
$12.39 A truly brilliant and original concept for a tribute album, Stoned Again can be classified as many things: a Barry Goldberg solo record (his first in 20 years), a Rolling Stones tribute, as well as a sort of modern-day Super Session album. Goldberg, a veteran keyboardist and songwriter who was one of the founding members of the Electric Flag, has also played on hundreds of sessions for artists ranging from Bob Dylan to the Flying Burrito Brothers. Aside from showing off his imposing keyboard skills, Stoned Again is a vital example of his ability as a tasteful and inventive arranger. A good illustration of this is the smoky barroom funk of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," which renders the actual tune almost unrecognizable, ...
