Stephen Gardner's earlier band Lorelei was at the forefront of genre-blending American indie experimentation. The bassist's Lorelei mates went their separate ways after one album and a pocketful of singles. Gardner wasn't so easily dissuaded from the off-beaten path. His enthusiasm and creative spirit were quickly rekindled by the renegade rhythms of English drum-and-bass. Soon after, Gardner's solo Chessie project was born. Lorelei's latent affinity for dub trappings certainly haunts SIGNAL SERIES, whether manifest in Gardner's ear-tugging basslines, in the tilting, cathedral-like echoes and chimes of "The Last Lie I Ever Told," or in the trick-laden acoustic treatments of "At Grade," "Tourist Union #63," and "Sleep Like a Kitten." But Gardner takes his most provocative cues from the possibilities posed--but often underdeveloped--by such "drone-and-bass" contemporaries as Third Eye Foundation and Boymerang. As the breakbeats rattle and clatter throughout "Clear Block" and the feedback-streaked "Sandpatch," Gardner suffuses Chessie with the hazy, dreamily queasy melodic essence of dreampop. Forsaking hackneyed synth patches for the beguiling timbres of looped accordions, Spanish guitars, sculpted feedback, and trickling ivories, such tracks as the brilliant "Approach Limited" refresh the traditional palette of drum-and-bass and present Gardner as a true American original.

| | I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In T Live At Dante's CD (2006)
Signal Series
$12.79 If ever there was a pull-no-punches, heart-on-the-sleeve, B.S.-free rock band, Portland, Oregon-based quintet I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House is that band. From the band that shouted "Fuck Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church", in the song "Westbrook Baptist Church", standing up for unheard voices everywhere that detest Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church’s godhatesfags.com website and general attitude towards those different then them. While also speaking out against the current presidential administration ("Things That Fail"), senseless murders ("Rachel Corrie"), rock stars ("The Ballad of Courtney Taylor-Taylor), and gun control (Dear Mr. Heston). I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House may not be as poetic as Dylan or as accessible as Springsteen, but their gut-wrenching, in-your-face approach gets the message across none-the-less.With three studio albums out now via Portland-based indie In Music We Trust Records - 2002's "Creepy Little Noises", 2004's "Put Here To Bleed", and 2005's "Menace" - fans have cherished the studio records, but recognized that the energy of their live show has yet to be captured on disc.Until now.I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House’s "Live At Dante’s" (In ...

Signal Series
$12.69 Driving South: A Brief HistoryFounding members, Simon Gunter and Vibhash Chakraborty, met in 1996 while attending the University of Wollongong, and have remained friends ever since. The two played in a band together for several years and wrote and recorded original music. At the conclusion of university, both moved to Sydney.Still passionate about pursuing a music career, an ad was placed in local street press for a drummer. None were to their liking until David Igra turned up. After two rehearsals it was clear that he was the man for the job and was offered the position.Work began on 'Thats How it Goes' in August 2007 and was completed and released January 2008. The album has been well received by fans and has already generated sales, street press and some amazing testimonials. The first three tracks from the album, Mia’s Song, Rosie and That’s How it Goes, have done particularly well. Visit the official website for more information.Driving South had managed to combine three distinct cultural influences and styles to create a new, international sound, which has one been described as an “Aussie band with ...
