Part of Triple X Records' ongoing reissue series of Johnny Thunders live albums, BELFAST NIGHTS documents a ragged-but-right trio set recorded at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland on October 27, 1984. Thunders, the ex-New York Dolls punk icon and former leader of the Heartbreakers, is backed by ex-Clash drummer Terry Chimes and relatively unknown bassist Keith Yon.
As always with solo Thunders shows, the fantastic and the wretched share the same space-often in the same song. That unevenness eventually becomes part of the charm. The 19-track set opens, as usual, with a muscular version of the surf classic "Pipeline" and careens through punk covers and New York Dolls and Heartbreakers classics like "Personality Crisis," "Chinese Rocks"-which the band attempts three times, and the immortal "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory." This same concert was previously released on the Anagram label as BELFAST ROCKS.
An explosive live recording of the legendary New York Dolls' guitarist's show at the Queen's University's McMordie Hall in Belfast. This is far more than a collectable rarity featuring soaring versions of classic tracks like 'Chinese Rocks' & 'Pipeline' this is Thunders at his sleazy best. Johnny is quoted as saying, 'Like Detroit used to be in '74, I get the same feeling from Belfast'. Includes liner notes from Rudi's Brian Young.

| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Belfast Rocks album
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The sublime "In Spanish Harlem" takes a Paul Simon-esque look at New York City but with a decidedly eased-back Southern tempo. The entire album, in fact, rides along at a leisurely pace, with the majority ...

| | Auteur Labels: New Hormones CD (2008)
Belfast Rocks songs
$13.59 Part of a set of albums designed to showcase the labels LTM is so often associated with due to numerous reissues, Auteur Labels: New Hormones is useful in that it takes a solid look at one of the most influential but ultimately obscure D.I.Y. outfits in the U.K. in the late '70s and early '80s. If releasing the Buzzcocks' Spiral Scratch was almost all Richard Boon and company had to initially do to gain lasting fame -- little surprise that the band's "Boredom" starts the compilation -- then everything else was much more of a wayward and often fascinating exploration of local sounds and styles that took a much different route altogether. That the Buzzcocks' classic anthem is immediately followed by one of Pete Shelley's most outre efforts -- the rambling ghost-of-Krautrock instrumental jam "Big Noise from the Jungle," a Tiller Boys single from 1980 -- says it far more effectively than anything else, and from there the snapshots ranging from the somewhat well-known (Diagram Brothers, Ludus) to the utterly obscure (the Decorators, whose one single for the label, "Twilight View," is a pleasant enough bit of romantic pop/rock) provide an aural portrait of ferment and dissatisfaction with a cohesive label sound -- much to New Hormones' credit. As ...
