In part a documentary on the change and decline of the fishing industry, in part an exploration of folk song and traditions, Singing the Fishing is one of the best of the radio ballads that Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, and Charles Parker developed. Thanks in part to the fine singing of Yarmouth native Sam Larner, who began working on fishing boats in the 19th century, and remembered the age of sail, this becomes both a comprehensive and impressionistic history, starting in Yarmouth, and then, after the introduction of the diesel fishing fleet, moves up to Scotland, where the North Sea fleet made its home. The songs and narration cover every aspect of fishing, from signing on to the boats after leaving school to bringing the catch home, with, of course, plenty about the time on the boats. There are plenty of sound effects -- most gathered on the boats by the principals -- to keep everything very much alive, and there's a real sense of depth in talking to the fishermens' wives, the ones who wait and hope at home. As usual, MacColl proves himself to be an exemplary songwriter, gleaning his material from the fabric of real lives. The mix of field recordings, music, and recording techniques served them well for a radio show which proved to be groundbreaking, with the trio having learned from their two previous radio ballads, with the epic track "Up Jumped the Herring" a true standout. ~ Chris Nickson
Britain's herring fishing communities are the subject of this, perhaps the best-remembered and most widely heard of all the radio-ballads. It was broadcast in more than 80 countries, and won the 1960 Prix d'Italia for radio documentary. (First received:

Singing The Fishing album
$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set ...

Singing The Fishing CD music
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American ...

$15.05 Once upon a time, one could be assured that bluegrass bands, wherever they happened to be playing to make a buck or two, originated from the South. It was Southern music, after all, but thanks to radio and records, this regional music traveled to such odd places as upstate New York. Eric and Leigh Gibson grew up listening to first and ...

| | Francois Brisson L'Evasion CD (2003)
Singing The Fishing songs
$16.45 At a very young age, François would escape into his imagination, going beyond the limits of time and place. When he picked up his first guitar at the age of 11, a musical connection was born. He had found his path: Music became a life project, a vital relationship, something through which he wanted to travel and explore. Inspired by the artistic community in Montreal, François moved there when he was around 20, determined to pursue his ambition. He perfected his art in the company of Leonardo de Luca, and never missed a chance to go on stage to live his passion and share it with other musicians. It is out of this experience that he wrote and composed L'Évasion. L'Évasion is the mirror of craziness, the desire to be free, a voyage inside. François doesn't try to follow influences from pop, but rather seeks a musical tonality able to transmit the essence of his poetic texts. With this as a goal, he doesn't hesitate to bring out the personal character of his compositions by borrowing from different musical genres. L'Évasion ...
