Given the social relevance of the other radio ballads produced by Ewan MacColl, Charles Parker, and Peggy Seeger, on the surface The Fight Game seems as if it could be lightweight and indulgent. In point of fact, it proves to be a very weighty topic indeed, drawing on comments from fighters, trainers, and managers to offer a comprehensive portrait of a sport where the boxers themselves are simply people using the only skill they possess to escape the trap of poverty -- a fact true for so many sportsmen across the globe (as one of the participants says, "Have you ever seen a millionaire's son in the ring?"). But they're exploited at every turn -- the litany of a manager taking 20 percent of a fighter's earnings is repeated often. Examining why boys become boxers -- often through the encouragement of fathers who would beat them if they didn't fight back or through a laissez faire playground culture at school -- to the way they train, it's engrossing, the mix of music and soundbites forming a complete documentary mosaic. It all inevitably culminates in the weighing-in, the anticipation and nerves in the dressing room, and the big fight itself, which ends in either victory or blinding defeat. It's a place without a middle ground, with room only for winners and losers. For all the heartbreak, however, and the real riches only going to a rare few, those who'd been in the fight game looked back on it fondly. These aren't the heavyweight champions, the famous names, either. They're the lowly men who toiled on bills around Britain on a Friday night, picking up income from bouts as an alternative to working in a factory or going to prison, and they're treated here with respect and sympathy. The Fight Game (whose musical theme comes from the use of trumpets throughout) shines a light on something not often seen, the life and times of the barely professional boxer, and in doing so it makes a strong statement about society and the culture of channeled violence and spectator sports. Call it heavyweight, in the very best sense of the word. ~ Chris Nickson
Part documentary, part allegory, "The Fight Game" takes the listener into the gladiatorial arena of professional boxing. Features Bob Davenport, Gordon McCulloch, Ewan MacColl, John Reavey, Peggy Seeger & others.

Purchase Fight Game CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Walker Brothers Ultimate Collection CD (2008)
Fight Game album
$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker ...
| | Blues, Blues Christmas Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Fight Game CD music
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) ...

| | All Seeing I Pickled Eggs & Sherbet CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Fight Game music CDs
$26.19 All Seeing I is the working name of three U.K.-based DJs: Parrot, Buckel, and Honer. Their first full-length release, Pickled Eggs & Sherbet, is a collaborative effort between the "I" -- as they call themselves -- and a series of guest vocalists, including Jarvis Cocker, Philip Oakey, Simon Boswell, Babybird, and Tony Christie. The album produced two hits, "Walk Like a Panther" and "The Beat Goes On," but failed to match the success of those songs. Most of the tracks sound entirely appropriate for the chosen vocalist -- "1st Man in Space" features Philip Oakey and sounds like the Human League -- which is good, but not all that interesting. Jarvis Cocker is the major player on the album, responsible for most of the songwriting. Again, that can work well, but too much of the material sounds like quirky Pulp efforts. Despite being given an opportunity to explore other ...
