The Italian Instabile Orchestra comprises some of the best Italian jazz musicians to play original arrangements of Italian jazz. This two-CD set culls selections from the highly successful three-day Italian Instabile Festival held in Pisa in the winter of 1997. What makes this such a striking recording is the range and diversity of the Italian jazz represented here. The recording mixes excerpts (and time permitting, entire pieces) featuring the whole orchestra with numerous small groups. The results are riveting and often sensational. From the trombone duo of Giancarlo Schiaffini and Sebi Tramontana, to alto saxophonist Mario Schiano's classic quintet recording of the free-style "To Be Continued" to the astonishing virtuosity of multi-saxophonist Eugenio Colombo, not to mention the wildly animated big-band charts, the astonishing quality of Italian jazz is laid bare, to glorious effect. With generous recording time of more than 140 minutes, this is the best starting point for those seeking a glimpse at the thriving and innovative Italian jazz scene. ~ Steve Loewy

Italian Instabile Festival songs
$9.99 With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band now; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, we can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive rhythm guitar, Lou Pagani's piano, the droll Bob Edmondson's dulcet trombone, etc. Pisano, who debuted as a composer on Going Places, comes up with a memorably whistleable song "So What's New," and the rest of Alpert's songwriting brigade (Ervan ...

| | Suni Paz Alerta Sings Children's Songs In Spanish And English CD (1980)
Italian Instabile Festival songs
$13.35 ALERTA SINGS also available on cassette on Smithsonian Folkways (45012).
This combines the 1980 Folkways LP ALERTA Sings: Children's Songs in Spanish and English and the 1977 Folkways LP Canciones para el Recreo: Children's Songs for the Playground onto one CD. ALERTA is an acronym for A Learning Environment Response To All, a curriculum for young children developed at Columbia University. ALERTA placed a value on multiculturalism and bilingualism, and this program of 31 songs, performed by noted children's singer and guitarist Suni Paz, is devoted to songs from Latin America and the Caribbean. These are really brief tracks -- as short as 30 seconds, and only longer than two minutes in a couple of cases -- with both Spanish and English lyrics. They're sung capably by Paz, sometimes with sympathetic, unobtrusive accompanying vocalists, sometimes a cappella, and usually on guitar, although piano is also used. Canciones para el Recreo: Children's Songs for the Playground is sung entirely in Spanish, and devoted to songs that Paz learned in Argentina and Chile. This really stands out in the children's music field, which usually employs simple, often bare-bones, musical arrangements. This set of material is considerably fuller in sound, as Paz's vocals, guitar, and charango are complemented by other musicians on guitar, cello, electric piano, and percussion. This makes the songs more interesting to hear, and doesn't slick them up so much that they sound dumb or unadvisedly commercial. You might even enjoy some of these songs on their ...
