With nods to Albert Ayler and Frank Wright, Perelman just keeps on pumping out recordings bound to stand the test of time. His constant exploration of new sound combinations in successful ways is what makes his work so compelling. Here, he uses Tomas Ulrich's cello as almost a second horn, while Dominic Duval's string bass and Jay Rosen's drums lay the groundwork. The compositions -- all of which were written by the saxophonist -- are not as lyrical nor as memorable as on some of Perelman's other releases. Nonetheless, the music is just as formidable, and often startling, Ulrich and Perelman attractively locking horns. Perelman blows the "trombivo" (described as a trombone with a sax mouthpiece) on at least one short track, but don't expect to hear sounds of J.J. Johnson or even Roswell Rudd. It sounds a bit like a constipated saxophone, and should at least satisfy the curious. ~ Steve Loewy
free-jazz alchemist Perelman, who plays tenor sax & tenor trombivo, is joined by cellist Tomas Ulrich, bassist Dominic Duval & drummer Jay Rosen on highly animated compositions that break the boundaries of jazz
Ivo Perelman Quartet: Ivo Perelman (tenor saxophone); Tomas Ulrich (cello); Dominic Duval (bass); Jay Rosen (drums).JazzTimes (5/00, pp.161-2) - "...A more typical free jazz vein, Perelman's high-octane solos met blow for blow by the frenetic, rapid-motion rhythm section....few musicians today put so much of themselves into their solos." $8.75 "Plush" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal."
The group that put San Diego on the musical map, Stone Temple Pilots released their debut album with no fanfare, and caught the public's eye only after touring for a year. CORE's sound--relentlessly pounding guitars, a heavy bottom and a singer whose vocal style bled with some unseen pain--played perfectly into the swell of grunge that had been building up in the mainstream for two years before its release. Topically, CORE went beyond the the usual sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll fare associated with hard rock. The drill instructor intro that singer Weiland chants off at the beginning of "Dead & Bloated" is a disgusted swipe at the rivers of apathy coursing through America. The enigmatic singer often donned a dress on stage to drive home the point of the anti-rape song "Sex Type Thing."
Guitarist Dean DeLeo's playing grinds and swirls, pulling the listener to and fro on a crunchy carpet of distortion. Brother Robert's bass rumbles and pops thunderously, as drummer Eric Kretz matches him with unbridled ferocity. STP click spectacularly on the consecutive tandem of "Sin" and "Naked Sunday," taking on the political hot-button of religion. "Sin" addresses the danger of blind piety that leaves no room for compassion, while "Naked Sunday" deals with the quest for God and the uncertainty of such spiritual pursuits. Pretty heavy stuff for a group that should be more concerned with living the stereotypical rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

| | Essential Merle Haggard: The Epic Years CD (2004) Remastered
Sieiro CD music
$6.79 The 1980s were a tough time for country music; mainstream Nashville was filled with watered-down MOR, and classic country singers like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash were foundering. True to form, the famously willful Merle Haggard stuck to his guns throughout this dark era, and his stint on Epic was full of tradition-minded, emotion-filled country music as powerful as anything being recorded at the time, if not as arresting as his legendary '60s work.
"Big City," from Haggard's 1981 album of the same name, became something of a staple tune. The randy "Let's Chase Each Other Around the Room" reveals not only Merle's rascally nature, but his ongoing infatuation with the Western Swing sound. The mournful ballads "Going Where the Lonely Go" and "Are the Good Times Really Over (I Wish a Buck Was Still Silver)" show Haggard's matchless way with melancholy. Duets with George Jones and Willie Nelson indicate that Haggard never lost the respect of his peers, even if his profile at the time wasn't at its highest. Many point to the late '90s as Merle's "comeback" period, but this collection proves that neither he nor his gift ever really went away.
