Another wacko set from Dr. Chadbourne, who has collected assorted pieces recorded throughout the United States. There are several groups represented here, the most successful being the one on the opening track with Chadbourne on electric guitar, Eena Ballard on electric viola, Joee Conroy on electric guitar and acoustic strings, Steve Good on reeds, and Norman Minogue on theremin and drums. As with the remainder of the album, there are surprises galore, with noise, cute inserts, and fine improvisational shorts thrown into the pot. The same group takes a stab at a couple of Ayler pieces ("Prophecy" and "Change Has Come") as well as the Rodgers & Hart tune, "Glad to Be Unhappy." Chadbourne's atrocious vocals on "Don't Happy, Be Worry" and Gershwin's "I've Got a Crush on You" are part of the fun, but silliness has its limits. ~ Steven Loewy
album signifies a definite change of direction in Dr. Chadbourne's music, with the emphasis on his singing; he finishes the album with his favourite song "I've Got A Crash On You" - all in all, the CD is 68 minutes of sheer fun & pleasureThe Wire (4/00, p.64) - "...These musical miniatures are not without a certain charm and grace. His Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks-style treatment of the Rogers and Hart song 'Glad To Be Unhappy' is particularly fine..." $13.59 This double-CD set is not only the best of Bill Chase's output but -- comprising all three of their albums -- virtually their complete finished studio work, before the plane crash that killed Chase and much of the group. The mastering on this Wounded Bird reissue is excellent, with a full solid bass sound topped by soaring highs on the brass and no compression to speak of. It's not as though this catalog has been overused, in terms of its master tape library -- apart from the hit "Get It On" -- but it's still good ...
