This two-CD set (reissued from a triple LP) is by no means indispensable Sun Ra, but it does give a sense of what the Arkestra sounded like live in the mid-1980s. All the excesses are there, including the silly, repetitive lyrics that made the group such a blast to watch. A healthy portion of the tunes are standards, including "Mack the Knife" (with a hilarious Louis Armstrong imitation), "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Satin Doll," and "Days of Wine and Roses." The band could swing mightily, and it harbored an uncanny ability to perform virtually the entire history of jazz in a single set. This version of the Archestra (recorded in Athens, Greece) includes mainstay saxophonists Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, and Danny Ray Thompson; three percussionists; and only a single brass player (trumpeter Ronnie Brown). A must for Sun Ra collectors and aficionados of the exotic, but for others, there is better Ra available. ~ Steven Loewy

Live At Praxis '84 songs
$11.49 Music From Tomorrow's World is a fascinating document and a boon to Sun Ra collectors. It gathers previously unheard tapes from two sources: one from the Wonder Inn club and one from Majestic Hall, probably a rehearsal. Both were recorded in 1960, toward the end of the Arkestra's Chicago period. The Wonder Inn tape is especially revealing, as it presents the Arkestra in front of a crowd. ...

| | Joelle Leandre At The Lemans Jazz Festival CD (2006)
Live At Praxis '84 music CDs
$27.35 The 2005 edition of the LeMans Jazz Festival included a whole series devoted to Joëlle Léandre. Between April 26 and May 1, she performed five times, with different partners, and this two-disc set culls highlights from every concert. Two sets are represented on disc one. Up first is a joyful, spirited performance by Les Diaboliques (Léandre, vocalist Maggie Nicols, and pianist Irène Schweizer), a key project in Léandre's recent career. The whimsy of this trio is elegantly counterbalanced by a duo set with William Parker, darker and more tempestuous ("Meeting Three" is one of the best improvisations these two have recorded together). Disc two covers the other three lineups, in increasing size order. Listeners are ...
