House/Trance: CD1 is the Deeper Mix, but it's far from a warm up. Instead, it swings from the android voice echoes of Soul Mekanik's 'I'll Call U' to the Canter of Fluke's vintage Brit House anthem 'Bullet'. CD2 starts with an explosion: H-Bomb's 'Groove Attack', Futureshock's 'Sparc' runs Giorgio Moroder down with a vicious rhythm. Neil Himmos's 'Play' toys with Sound System Bass.Mixmag (12/00, p.177) - 3 out of 5 - "...An outstanding mix of prog, tribal and deep house..." Muzik (12/00, p.105) - 3 out of 5 - "...A jaunt through the deep from the maestro of minimal manipulation....Everything you'd expect from one of the experts." Global Underground: Amsterdam album
$21.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Steve Lawler.
Rather than feature progressive house or the various trance styles that have become synonomous with Global Underground, this installment in the Nu Breed series of Global Underground albums finds Steve Lawler moving through a double-disc set of fairly deep tribal house. Lawler occasionally breaks away from the tribal house motif, as during the concluding ...

Global Underground: Amsterdam music CDs
$21.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Nick Warren.
Far from the sunny climes of Ibiza or Ayia Napa -- in fact, well beyond the northernmost point ever reached by the Global Underground series -- lies Reykjavik, Iceland, a musical hotspot thanks to Sigur Rós and Múm (plus, of course, founding mother Björk). Hardly a clubbing mecca, but it is the perfect stage for a chill-out album. Mixer Nick Warren's fifth time heading a GU mix is dark like his 2000 edition from Amsterdam, but instead of mid-tempo trance it's down-tempo chill, much closer in execution to his superb 1999 volume in the Back to Mine series. The Global Underground label had hopped on the chill-out bandwagon during 2002 with Steve Lawler's Lights Out and Global Underground: Afterhours, but trendiness aside, Warren is a brilliant downbeat DJ with ...

$21.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Deep Dish.
"Thank You (Deep Dish Vocal Remix)" won the 2002 Grammy Award For Best Remixed Recording.
Incredibly nocturnal and hypnotic, propelled from the beginning of the first set to the end of the second with gigantic basslines and murky vocal dubs, Deep Dish's debut mix for the long-running Global Underground series is absolutely enveloping. It submerses you with its weight and its darkness as well as its numbing sense of bliss. Where ...

On the back of the CD case is a photo that is basically a heads-up as to what you can expect from this debut album by 23-year-old jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara. She is standing outside wearing a black dress and a strange yellow-and-white wrap. Her face is turned up to the sky, her eyes and mouth closed, her jaw clenched; her arms are held straight down by her sides with her fingers splayed wide. It's a stance that bespeaks intense energy and a certain defiance. Most of the music contained in the CD seems to have been made in a similar attitude, for better and, occasionally, for worse. Uehara plays with an almost demonic energy and amazing stamina; on a program that consists entirely of original compositions, most of them delivered in a standard piano trio format, she zips from style to style with a sense of urgency that borders at times on the manic. Her propulsive "XYZ" opens the album with churning intensity; "Double Personality" finds her alternating between nearly harmolodic free improvisation and carefully composed modern jazz; "Joy" offers a gentle breath of fresh air before she resumes her headlong musical charge. The album ends with a bonus track, an unaccompanied piano piece called "The Tom and Jerry Show," which alternates between loopy, Carl ...

| | Telescopes Third Wave CD (2002) Digipak
Global Underground: Amsterdam album
$13.25 The Telescopes' long-awaited (and aptly titled) Third Wave arrives nine years after their second and last full-length album for Creation (the celebrated U.K. imprint also released three singles). The recordings for a third album failed, due to difficulties within the group's then-current lineup. There were lengthy delays, and finally the group splintered in 1995. Stephen Lawrie and Joanna Doran ("Jo") didn't stop making music together in those nine years. In 1996, he and Doran began collaborating with film composer Nick Hemming on film music, and soon the trio had formed a new group, Unisex. A few years later, Unisex's debut was released by New York-based Double Agent Records. In addition to collaborating with Füxa, Lawrie soon began writing new material that he imagined would work best for the Telescopes instead of Unisex. Even so, Third Wave in some ways picks up where Unisex's 1999 album, Stratosphere, left off. This time out, Lawrie and Doran are the only remaining members of the group's original lineup. Lawrie is clearly the one in charge, with downbeat electronics, soporific ...
