| | Mike Mainieri An American Diary CD Mike Mainieri Discography of CDs
In addition to a few group originals, vibraphonist Mike Mainieri performs some unusual pieces with his quartet (Joe Lovano on tenor, soprano, and alto clarinet; bassist Eddie Gomez; and drummer Peter Erskine) on this CD, including two folk songs and selections by Leonard Bernstein ("Somewhere"), Frank Zappa ("King Kong"), Aaron Copland ("Piano Sonata"), Roger Sessions ("Piano Sonata No. 1"), and Samuel Barber ("Overture to the School for Scandal"). The pianoless quartet (which displays a lot of versatility by Joe Lovano) turns all of the music into creative jazz. The most interesting aspect to this thought-provoking disc is how difficult it is to tell which compositions are taken from classical music and which are new. There is a surprising unity to the potentially difficult material; the performances on the rather moody outing reward repeated listenings. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Miami Sound: Rare Funk & Soul From Miami, Florida (1967 - 1974) CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
An American Diary songs
$26.29 An excellent collection of the best funk and soul the just predated the disco era and helped shape it's parameters. Features million selling artists like Gwen McCrae, George McRae, and Timmy Thomas alongside unknown artists outside of the Sunshine State such as James Knight & The Bulters, Frank Williams and The Rocketeers and All The People.
Like other releases from the U.K.-based Soul Jazz label -- such as Philadelphia Roots or New Orleans Funk -- the 17-track Miami Sound: Rare Funk & Soul from Miami Florida 1967-1974 prides itself on its obscurity, digging out tracks that have been lost to all but the fanatically dedicated collector. That's Soul Jazz's stock in trade: They occasionally feature hits, but they're regional hits, and none of the material on any of their collections is readily available on CD. While there's the occasional feeling that sides are chosen for obscurity's sake, it's often overshadowed by the consistency of the material; it all sounds of a piece, due to the compilers' expert ears and their desire to ...

For the past year, Brandon has toured the world as a background singer for Christina Aguilera and shared the stage with artists like Patti LaBelle, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Earth Wind and Fire, Johnny Mathis, Black Eyed Peas, Anastacia, Angie Stone, and Usher. You've already heard Brandon Rogers, but you haven't heard his own music…yet. "I wanted to be a star long before I wanted to be a background singer. I love what I do, don't get me wrong, but I just want to do it on a personal level," Brandon says. "If the music belongs to someone else artistically, you can only find so much to connect to. I'm really big on being connected to the music." Brandon describes his music — an artful genre-crossing blend of soul and pop — and his writing process as being very personal. "The entire demo was written while ...
