Girls Can't Hit album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise ...

Girls Can't Hit songs
$6.55 Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern ...
| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Girls Can't Hit album
$13.69 Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York).
Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was as responsible as anyone else in rehabilitating Germany's post-war world image. The Taragon label is re-releasing all of Kaempfert's many albums in an ambitious reissue project. This excellent compilation is the one to have however.
As well as being a successful composer ("Strangers in the Night," ...

Girls Can't Hit music CDs
$12.39 This 1999 reissue contains six bonus tracks not on the original release.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios).
This auspicious recording started out almost as an afterthought. Jimmy Smith was in the midst of making his excellent big-band album ANY NUMBER CAN WIN when he stepped into a couple of New York studios with old pal Kenny Burrell and a rhythm section to quickly cut the sides that became BLUE BASH. The air of spontaneity is certainly present here, as Burrell and Smith use the common language of the blues to move through a varied program.
An appropriately simmering version of the Peggy Lee hit "Fever" finds Smith at his most sensual. The upbeat, Burrell-penned "Travelin'" has something of a gospel jubilee feel, along the lines of "When the Saints Go Marching In," and Burrell's joyous lines makes the most of the celebratory mood. The standard "Easy Living" finds the fiery Smith in an uncommonly wistful mode, contributing blissful, pretty organ runs over Burrell's lush harmonies. The revealing bonus ...
| | Isley Brothers Eternal CD (2001)
Girls Can't Hit songs
$6.39 "Contagious" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Reduced to siblings Ronald and younger brother Ernie (Rudolph became a minister, O'Kelly passed on in 1986, and Marvin was beset by diabetes), the Isley Brothers' Dreamworks debut is still very much in the vein of past triumphs. Plenty of smooth grooves, songs dealing with the varying facets of romance, and at least one Isleyfied cover (this time out Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" finds Ronald Isley transforming the MOR standard into a slow jam classic).
Resurrecting Mr. Biggs, the larger-than-life playa alter-ego that first surfaced on R. Kelly's 1995 hit "Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)," older sibling Ronald gets to coolly snarl his way through "Contagious," a tale of discovered infidelity featuring Kelly as the other guy. Other notables who pop up are Philly songstress Jill Scott (the simmering duet "Said Enough") and Angela Winbush (the silk-sheet anthem "Warm Summer Night"). Ernie Isley's guitar playing also plays a major role whether it's on the chugging jam "Move Your Body" or the smoldering "Ernie's Jam." Aided by the cream of contemporary R&B, The Isleys continue to prove their relevance after 40-plus years of forging trends.
Additional personnel includes: Angela Winbush (vocals, keyboards, programming); Steve "Stone" Huff, Jimmy Jam, Terry Louis (various instruments); Raphael Saadiq (guitar, bass, background vocals); Donnie Lyle (guitar, bass); James "Big Jim" Wright (keyboards, background vocals); Kevin Wooten (keyboards); Martgol ...
