Cruisin For A Bluesin' album
$13.15 She's already being called "the new face of the blues" by the press in her native Britain, but her debut album is the first opportunity most Americans will have to hear Joanne Shaw Taylor's sharp, fiery take on blues-based rock. Opening with the dark and sultry "Going Home," Taylor makes her intentions clear from the very ...
| | Ray Wylie Hubbard A. Elightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) CD (2010) Digipak
Cruisin For A Bluesin' CD music
$11.98 Texas songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard pushed life to the margin and lived to sing about it. In the process, his songs now possess the tenderness of a poet, the empathy of a historian, and the raw nerve of a card shark. On 2009's A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C), he adds "mythmaker" to his songwriting qualities. Hubbard strips his music to the bone here, and uses the Mississippi Delta blues tradition to his own ends. His music is raw yet utterly contemporary and crafted. Snarling acoustic, slide, and electric guitars played bottleneck style, dirty mandolins, pots, pans, stomp boxes, basses, organs, harmoniums, drums, rattles, shakers, and tambourines are the instruments that fuel this impressive collection. On "Down Home Country Blues," Hubbard is visceral, and you can feel it in your belly bone: "Sugar's got some sweetness to it as ...

The resurgence of Chicago-based blues in the mid- to late 1960s came with an entirely new breed of icons to bear the torch. Among them were the decidedly electric Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Joining Muddy Waters (guitar/vocals) and Otis Spann (piano) on the aptly titled Fathers and Sons are three Butterfield Blues Band alumni: Michael Bloomfield (guitar), Sam Lay (drums), and leader Paul Butterfield (guitar). Further augmenting ...

| | Taj Mahal CD (1968) Remastered
Cruisin For A Bluesin' CD music
$7.15 Includes liner notes by Tom Nolan, Taj Mahal & Stanley Crouch.
Though these 1968 sides were cut in LA at the apex of the burgeoning counterculture movement, the main influences at play here are those of the Mississippi Delta blues. Featuring early performances from Ry Cooder and Jesse Ed Davis, TAJ MAHAL is the joyfully confident debut that propelled the eponymous bluesman to national recognition. Comparable to similar experiments by Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and British blues maven John Mayall, Mahal's sound is both intensely ...

| | Black Lodge Singers Kids' Pow-Wow Songs CD (1996)
Cruisin For A Bluesin' songs
$13.19 Here is a recording project that is just a great, great idea. The masses who are regretfully naïve in the understanding of Native American music might interpret any sort of powwow music as sounding religious -- or aggressive, if it is a John Wayne or Richard Widmark-type listener. But there are powwow songs about getting drunk, eating pizza, how pretty a girl looks, and a myriad of other subjects. What about an entire collection of these songs about subjects of interest to small children? It is just a delightful idea, and -- at the risk of appearing sacrilegious -- it is worth mentioning how interesting it is to mull over philosophical connections between the characters in some of these songs, the characters in Native American folk or religious tales, and the characters in the lore of the various organized religions collectively known to folks on the reservation as "the white man." These interpretations wind up giving cartoon characters a kind of dignity, making a Looney Tunes tribute as meaningful as an old Cherokee tale about a bunny and a cat. Children of all sorts might be interested in ...
