Honest Don's Welcome Wagon CD music
$6.19 This compilation of Fat Wreck Chords' considerable roster of alternative/punk bands includes such hardy perennial acts as No Use For A Name, Propaghandi, and Lagwagon, all of whom deserve medals for service beyond the call to the disenfranchised youth of (by now) a couple of generations. It goes without saying that all these bands operate below (or above) major label radar, but they're all hugely enjoyable either despite or because of this.

| | Shonen Knife Yama-No Attchan CD (1984) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Honest Don's Welcome Wagon CD music
$8.29 The year between the recording of their first record, 1983's Burning Farm, and their second, 1984's Yama-no Attchan, allowed Shonen Knife to improve their musicianship a touch. Not enough to mess up their innocent charm, but enough to make this record an improvement over their already quite good debut. The songs are just a bit stronger too. "Cycling Is Fun" bounces along on a near-Motown beat the likes of which they couldn't have done a year earlier, "Chinese Song" betrays the influence of dub punk like the Slits and the Raincoats, "Flying Jelly Attack" sports a killer bubblegum chorus and some tight riffing, and "Dali's Sunflower" betrays some heavy metal influence thanks to heavy power chords and guest guitarist Yasushi Utsunomiya's guitar mangling. The lyrical topics are just as wacky, though, covering insect collecting, leaves, cycling and cannibal plants. All in all, a stronger record than Burning Farm; more joyous, more memorable and more fun. Together they play like the blueprint for much of the American indie pop of the '80s and '90s. [As on Burning Farm a few of the songs here -- "Cycling Is Fun," "Insect Collector" and "Flying Jelly Attack" -- were re-recorded for 1993's Let's Knife]. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Beck Midnite Vultures CD (1999) Import
Honest Don's Welcome Wagon songs
$29.09 MIDNITE VULTURES contains a hidden song after several minutes of silence on track 11.
MIDNITE VULTURES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and for Best Alternative Music Album.
From the Stax-fried greasy horns that power the opening "Sexx Laws" to the falsetto-delivered slow jam of the closing "Debra," MIDNITE VULTURES is Beck's blatant funk-soul-brother turn. Having pillaged, plundered, cut, and pasted the scope of American heritage musics throughout his short extraordinary career, the slacker boy-wonder has made a party record to end the millennium, lascivious to the bone, and groove-ing to the core.
Whether he's blowing up Kool Keith-meets-Kraftwerk beats and rhymes on "Hollywood Freaks," getting into Prince-ly funky rock on "Peaches & Cream," or rocking the old-school electro on "Get Real Paid," this year's Beck model is more about mixing sci-fi R&B bizness with leather than staring down folk-derived dead ends. But don't believe he's forgotten how to masterfully collage his on-going postmodern pursuits into his new fashion--"Peaches & Cream" is self-conscious enough to quote Mississippi Fred McDowell, but as a sly sexy come-on, and repeated lyrics of juke-joint R&B standards help weave a thematic thread ...
