(1 Customer Review)
Slippin' In marks a return to the predominantly rockabilly sound of the Paladins' first two albums, strongly recalling the early years of Sun Records, when the line between rock & roll and country could be blurred to varying degrees at any time. There are bits of Western swing and surf music thrown in as well, adding to the group's freewheeling vibe; a fairly consistent set of songs, too, helps make this one of the Paladins' better albums. ~ Steve Huey

Slippin' In album
$14.49 Lyrics translated from the Spanish by Guillermo Hernandaz, Yolanda Zepeda and Jaime Nicolopulos.
Following on from his father Santiago Jimenez' own successful run as a conjunto musician in San Antonio, Flaco Jimenez put together a conjunto of his own in the '50s, eventually becoming one of the most famous figures in Tex-Mex music (also known as Musica Nortena in Mexico). Based on the polkas and waltzes Mexican performers refashioned as rancheras, the Tex-Mex conjunto style features accordion, the 12-string bajo sexto guitar, bass, and drums. Flaco immediately staked his claim in the music with a distinctly imaginative and ...

| | Someone To Love: The Birth Of The San Francisco Sound CD (1996) (Import) United Kingdom
Slippin' In music CDs
$17.05 Thirty-track compilation of early San Francisco rock from the Autumn label, some previously unissued. This disc gets docked a star because it's not the best or most economic way to collect this mid-'60s material, though much of it's of historic interest. The 13 Great Society cuts are all available on Sundazed's domestic Born to Be Burned CD; Sundazed has also devoted separate collections to the Mojo Men and the Vejtables, both of whom have songs here. The disc is filled out by unexceptional pop/garage rock by the Tikis and Butch Engle (most previously unissued). The tracks to watch out for, if you're a serious collector of San Francisco rock, are an acoustic, previously unreleased version of "Let's Get Together" by its composer, Dino Valenti, and a previously unissued cut by Mojo Men/Vejtables singer Jan Ashton, "About My Tears." If you're not a completist, you're better off searching for the separate-artist Sundazed comps. In any case, none of this is particularly great by either San Francisco rock or garage rock standards. The Great Society were an excellent and important group (the original version of "Somebody to Love" is here), but the live tapes from a later vintage that were issued on Columbia are far better than the relatively primitive cuts offered here. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Roy Roberts Deeper Shade Of Blue CD (1999)
Slippin' In CD music
$16.45 Robert's brand of blues comes from the R&B side of the book, a style he honed to perfection as guitarist for Dee Clark, Solomon Burke, Eddie Floyd and others. His second Kingsnake release finds him mining the same turf of slow blues, soul numbers and dance tracks as his 1997 outing, Every Shade of Blue. Standout tracks include "I'll Chase Your Blues Away," "Let Our Love Last Forever," "Mr. D.J." and duets with Little Royal on "I've Been Makin' Love" and Priscilla Price on "We're Gonna Work It Out." ~ Cub Koda
"Patty Benson doesn't just sing the blues-she whispers, cries and even belts out the blues. Her vocals ring with confidence and emotion. She's sultry and bold as she spills out her lyrics on each and every song. Benson opens up the CD with, POOR OLE YOU, which is a fun , up-tempo tune, backed up by a solid rhythm section and full horn section featuring, Rusty Smith, Scott Adair and David Wright. She slides into her 2,666 MILES, as bass player Mark VanMourik and drummer Harvey Mitchell drive her words home. BLACK CAT features some sweet tantalizing guitar playing by Roy Roberts. The soft guitar climbs up and down, winds all around Benson's straight-ahead vocals. All DRIED UP, is a classic , slow and sultry blues tune. Robert's guitar leads into Benson's powerful vocals. She starts singing softly and constrained, then slowly builds up with intensity as she finally belts out her powerful, heartfelt blues. Damn sweet. Patty Benson writes some great lyrics, and sings with a style she makes her own. Her band backs her with authority. 2,666 MILES is a great pocket of blues".Lisa GualtBlues ON StageMay 2002"2,666 MILES is a fine set of funky southern soul/blues by another new soul diva on Rock House label. Patty Benson list a few of her influences, but doesn't try to emulate them. She produces a sound that's all her own. Along with the title track, a few of my favorites are HIGH PRICE LOVE, the bluesy I CAN TOO, and the up beat SINGLE BLUES. An auspicious debut from this fine new artist. I'll be looking forward to hearing more from her in the future".Alan ShuttroBlues BytesDecember 2002"A ...
| | Breaking Laces Sohcahtoa CD (2003)
Slippin' In music CDs
$12.55 Sohcahtoa, the May 2004 release, has been spinning on college and specialty commercial radio across the country. It charted on CMJ's Top 200, and continues in heavy rotation on XM and elsewhere. The album, written and recorded by Willem Hartong - aka Tong - with a varied supporting cast and crew of musicians, was the impetus for the creation of what is now the solid three-piece touring band, Breaking Laces. The sound is smart indie rock, based in songwriting that's unique and real. From love songs to rock anthems to imaginary trips to outer space, the songs are inspiring and well-crafted, and at the same time, accessible and catchy. Tong fronts ...
