Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I ...

| | Royce Da 59 Street Hop CD (2009)
Rise Up CD music
$11.49 In pre-release interviews, Royce da 5'9" laid out a perfect description of his style: a Detroit kid brought up on Nas whose head was sent spinning once Eminem came around. Three years in the making--twelve months in prison for a DUI being part of the problem--STREET HOP often has a solid foundation that's absolutely classic in feel but also features those quirky, sick-o rhymes that are distinctly post-Shady. "I mix a between Chris Brown and Chris Jericho/Where's your daughter?" is an unsettling bit from the freaky track "Street Hop 2010" which goes on to reference Marlon Brando's Apache friend picking up his Oscar right before rattling off some psycho-babble about "syphilis nun chucks" and other bizarre whatnot. Hard to believe the convincing R&B stunner "Thing for Your Girlfriend" could follow with all its radio-friendly polish while elsewhere "New Money" brings reminders of Roc-A-Fella's heyday with its bright and grand Streetrunner production. The minimal "Soldier" features an innovative Frequency beat with a bit of Rick Rubin-styled crunch which Royce takes in another direction, going the Kool Keith route and hurling insults ...
| | Marc Cohn Rainy Season CD (1993)
Rise Up music CDs
$7.69 Marc Cohn's second outing manages to easily overcome the sophomore curse -- the material here is strong, relaxed, very assured, managing to be dramatic without being blatant. The overall album is warm and hypnotic, covering a variety of moods. It's a terrific and subtle piece of work. ~ Steven McDonald

| | Daara J Boomerang CD (2003)
Rise Up CD music
$11.49 Boomerang is the third album from Senegalese hip-hoppers Daara J. Here they continue their habit of using the music as a means to introduce heavier social and political issues. More important to the casual listener, though, will likely be the musical and vocal aspects themselves as the bulk of the lyrical content is in one of a number of non-English languages. The first thing one notices on the album is the introductory hyperspeed lyrical delivery that opens up Boomerang. The delivery is fast enough that the language can barely be discerned, let alone content. As the trio slows down, carefully worked out beats and bass grooves crawl in to form the real backing of the group, making a swaying groove that will last for the majority of the album. Guest spots from Sergent Garcia, China, Disiz la Peste, and most notably Rokia Traoré add additional aspects to works that would otherwise fall mildly flat, and those works without guests tend to be somewhat more highly crafted allowing for a finer performance from the main trio only. The trio's rap delivery can become a bit dry at times and overpowering at other times, but it tends to stay anchored in both directions by the backing music. The happy medium is held throughout, despite any wanderings on the parts of the overachieving MCs. As far as West African rap goes, this is some of the absolute best. Pick up an MC Solaar album for comparison on the French points, too, ...
| | Justin Timberlake Futuresex / Lovesounds CD (2006) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Rise Up music CDs
$39.49 Timberlake spared no expense recruiting some of the best producers on the scene. Beatmaker extraordinaire Timbaland is a primary collaborator, and his experimental stutter-funk landscapes make for the album's best moments (the title track, for example, or the spare, driving lead-off single "Sexyback"). Early Prince is a major touchstone for much of the disc, but Timberlake also draws on rolling, Dirty South jams ("Chop Me Up") and smooth, urban-contemporary loverman R&B ("My Love"). Its obsession with the bedroom notwithstanding, FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS shows Timberlake moving toward an exciting musical maturity.
Japanese pressing of the 2006 sophomore album from Timberlake features one bonus track: 'Pose' (Featuring Snoop Dogg). International superstar Justin Timberlake makes a welcome return to the charts this autumn with his second solo album, 'FutureSex/ LoveSounds'. Featuring production duties from the likes of Timbaland, JAWBreakers, Rick Rubin, and Justin himself, 'FutureSex/ LoveSounds' also includes collaborations with Three 6 Mafia, T.I., will.i.am, Snoop Dogg and Nelly Furtado. As proven by the first single, the bold ...
