One of the great lost '60s albums. Side one includes all six of the tracks the Misunderstood recorded in England in 1966, with magnificent guitar work and nervy, ambitious (if a bit overtly cosmic) songwriting that combines some of the best aspects of the Jeff Beck-era Yardbirds and Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd. Remember that Pink Floyd and Hendrix had yet to record when these sides were waxed; they aren't derivations, but genuinely innovative and groundbreaking performances. Side two contains seven pre-psychedelic demos from their U.S. garage days in the mid-'60s that, while not nearly as important as their 1966 work, are solid, crunching R&B-soaked rock in the tradition of their chief British influences. ~ Richie Unterberger

| Before The Dream Faded Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) The Greatest Shoulda-Beens in 60s Rock The Misunderstood was an awesome band. Hard-rocking and forward-thinking, they were on track to be major superstars of the era when the band was cruelly ripped apart by the Vietnam draft and criminal management. They left behind this small stash of songs, but they make up in quality what they lack in quantity. In short, here are six of the finest songs of the psych/garage era, anchored by the sound of Glenn Ross Campbell's astonishing pedal steel guitar, which sounds nothing like the weepy pedal steel of country music fame. When combined with the fuzzed-out, skilled playing of second guitarist Tony Hill, and Rick Browns strong clear singing voice, The Misunderstood will kick your sorry butt into garage Nirvana. All six of the touchstone tracks are here, including the standouts "Children Of The Sun", "I Unseen" "Find A Hidden Door" and "I Can Take You To The Sun". The rest of the disc is filled with intersesting earlier recordings, but the main course is those six songs. If you're a fan of the Yardbirds, The Who and/or The Creation, you should kick yourself if you don't pick up this disc. The Misunderstood were only here for a brief time, but this disc gives you the opportunity to hear what we (almost) missed. Submitted by tonyfitzg (Waltham MA) Was This Review Helpful? Believe the hype To say that the first six songs (recorded in late 1966) on this CD are nothing short of a revelation might be pushing it a bit, but rarely do obscure bands really live up to the hype.
Yes, you could say "ahead of it's time", but that's not sooo important - great songs, great playing, great overall sound - that's important.
The second half of the disc can't help but pale in comparison...but it's still solid mid 60s blues/rock. And "I'm not Talking" - if it was recorded in 1965 - is truly ahead of it's time.

Ahead of their time The liner notes of this album explain how this Riverside, Cal. band was taken under the wing of John Peel and brought to England. They were the buzz of the town and bands like Pink Floyd and The Move were quick to catch their show. Long story short, a lot of crap happened and the band broke up leaving only a handful of songs behind. Listening to the music one will understand why they were the rave of England Recorded in 1966 their swishing and swooping guitar-psych with touches of Eastern music predated just about every band. The sound quility is rough on some tracks but they have impact. Submitted by keithbarlog (Glen Ellyn, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Impressive I have "Children Of The Sun" on The Nuggets boxed set. I decided to buy the CD. I am impressed! This is one of the lost classics from the 60s' The lead singer has a great voice. The sound quality of the second half is not perfect, but it is just fine. Don't let that stop you from buying this gem. Submitted by Rick (Everett, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Before The Dream Faded
$14.79 This hour-long CD is one of the best bodies of British psychedelia ever released. It contains the complete Mighty Baby album from Head Records, expanded to 13 tracks with the addition of five tracks cut by the Action during its 1967 transition period. The opening number, "Egyptian Tomb," sets the tone for the entire album -- in terms of content, structure, and beat, it sounds like the early Allman Brothers, or maybe the Grateful Dead ...
| | H P Lovecraft H.P. Lovecraft/H.P. Lovecraft II CD (2000)
Before The Dream Faded
$13.59 H.P. Lovecraft's two self-titled albums are collected onto one disc that traces the band's development from a second-string psych band to a darker, proto-prog rock outfit. Despite some dated tracks on the first album and a slight lack of focus on the second, songs like "Wayfaring Stranger," "Time Machine," and "At the Mountains of Madness" showcase the unique harmonies and arrangments that made H.P. Lovecraft one of the most enduring cult psychedelic bands. ~ Heather Phares

| | Clear Light CD (1967)
Before The Dream Faded
$11.59 Kind of a minor league version of the Doors, Clear Light were a West Coast phenomenon, and although they didn't last too long, were an interesting group. A very good slice of Los Angeles psychedelia, Clear Light were a six-piece band that combined folk, rock, psychedelia, and even a touch of classical to their sound. The end result, though, is a little ponderous and pretentious, but strangely listenable. The big hit off this album (produced by Paul Rothchild and engineered by Bruce Botnick) was "Mr. Blue," a psychedelic ...

Before The Dream Faded
$16.19 Original US LP release was titled "Over Under Sideways Down".
This 31 track collection features the original 12 track album from 1966 in a mono version, then the entire album in a stereo version, including 5 bonus single tracks by Keith Relf, as well as 2 mono tracks that open the disc.
By the time the Yardbirds recorded ROGER THE ENGINEER in 1966, the British Invasion was in full swing. Like their brethren, they targeted Chicago blues as ground zero for musical inspiration. As a result, most Yardbirds recordings and live sets were chock full of numbers by the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson, Chuck Berry, and Elmore James. ROGER was a departure for the band, as all the material was self-penned.
With guitarist Jeff Beck leading the charge (having replaced departed blues purist Eric Clapton), the ...
