Journey To The Ancient City (Korla Pandit Salute) album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether ...

Journey To The Ancient City (Korla Pandit Salute) songs
$8.59 This budget-priced sampler contains ten recordings that figured in the pop Top 40 in 1985, all of them released originally on Columbia and Epic Records. Those labels also issued Top Ten hits during that year by the likes of Wham!, Sade, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Joel, among others, but none of them are found here. Instead, the tracks are by relatively minor acts, the most successful of them being REO Speedwagon and Luther Vandross. Nevertheless, these selections present many of these artists at their popular peaks. For Eddie Murphy, Cock Robin, 'Til Tuesday, Paul Young, Loverboy, and REO Speedwagon, the included song was their biggest hit. Mainstream pop/rock is the dominant style, as conveyed by Cock Robin, 'Til Tuesday, Young, Loverboy, the Hooters, and REO Speedwagon, but the influence of funk star Rick James is strongly felt in "Lovergirl," by his protégé ...

$24.45 Probably the best introduction to the band that made "grebo" a (sort of) household word for a few days. A two-disc set, it's a solid overview of the band that went from jangly rock group to industro-grebo-rap ...

Journey To The Ancient City (Korla Pandit Salute) CD music
$13.95 This 1974 recording from Scotland's Ivor Cutler features 45 tracks.
Ivor Cutler's appearance on two tracks of Robert Wyatt's harrowing 1973 album Rock Bottom led to the Scottish poet/musician's signing to Wyatt's label, Virgin Records. Although Cutler had been releasing records for a full decade and a half before the appearance of 1974's Dandruff, his debut on the U.K.'s pre-eminent art rock label brought his unique and occasionally unsettling whimsy an entirely new audience. Opening with a surprising brief instrumental played on an African-tuned percussion instrument, Dandruff quickly settles into familiar Cutler territory. Daffily ...
