Known for his adventurous leanings in his younger years, pianist Andrew Hill continues to compose challenging music in the later part of his career. Though the material hearkens to the time of his groundbreaking POINT OF DEPARTURE, it is with more burnished colors that Hill paints irregular abstractions on this session. Several New York post-bop veterans, including multi-reedists Marty Ehrlich and Greg Tardy, join Hill on this release.
The opening title track is a meandering piece that sets the tone for the disc with its free-flowing pulse that slowly builds in intensity underneath creative horn passages. Later, "Ball Square" presents a fiery Hill whipping up some Monk-ish lines while drummer Billy Drummond keeps the cauldron brewing with some very intense solo work. A high point is Hill's rare solo spot "Tough Love," which finds the pianist in a somewhat reflective mood. Another stellar sextet piece is the wickedly exciting "15/8," easily one of the pianists most raucous works. Finally, Hill returns with another solo venture, the incredibly brief "Focus."

Q (10/00, p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A sparkling, playful tumble....making thorough use of the trumpet-and-two-reeds frontline..." The Wire (6/00, pp.50-1) - "...Evidence that [he] is still much in his prime. The success of the album is largely due to the quality of the group he has assembled....Hill's long-delayed return marks an important new point of departure in his career." Down Beat (7/00, pp.69,72) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Snippets of melody slide past like fragments of a half-remembered dream, thin block chords create odd punctuation, and compositions resolve unexpectedly but perfectly. Welcome to Andrew Hill's world - always an interesting place to visit." Purchase Dusk CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)

| | Andrew Hill Passing Ships CD (1969) Remastered
Dusk CD music
$9.45 This larger group session was recorded for Blue Note in 1969 but had to wait until 2003 to see the light of day. It was worth the wait, since PASSING SHIPS is one of composer-pianist Andrew Hill's most varied and distinctive efforts. Actually, the group here isn't all that big when you check the lineup, but Hill's skillful writing makes it sound as if we're listening to a more spacious ensemble. In addition, he makes most effective use of reedman Joe Farrell's multi-instrumental talents here. Not only does Farrell excel in the usual tenor and soprano ...

Named after Hawkins' 1939 proto-bebop classic, this legendary collection proves why Hawkins is considered by many the finest tenor ever. Picking up his career after a stint alongside Louis Armstrong in Fletcher Henderson's big band and five years in prewar Europe, BODY AND SOUL focuses on Hawkins' essential small group sides of the '40s. Here the former swing enthusiast helped create bebop with the help of future jazz icons Benny Carter, J.J. Johnson, Zoot Sims and Max Roach. From "Meet Doctor Foo" to "Angel Face," Hawkins transforms standards like "My Blue Heaven" into something startlingly new and creates originals like "Bouncing With Bean" that would go on to influenced an entire generation of players. The mid-'50s orchestral sessions that end the album show Hawkins' eagerness to bring bebop's structures into new arenas, and the lovely, string-laden remake of the title track indicates that the experiment was a success.
Recorded at RCA Studios, New York, New York between 1939 and 1956. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern.
