| | Kerry Kearney CD Kerry Kearney Discography of CDs
New York City slide guitar demon Kerry Kearney (pronounced "Karney") comes to the table with this, his self-titled third album but his first for a label other than his own. This one finds him casting his slide guitar in different guises (acoustic Delta bluesman, Lowell George country trucker, frameworks for Bob Seger-styled power ballads, Cajun rockers, Stones-styled rockers) on originals and selected covers. The covers, however, are so drastically altered from the originals one wonders why he even bothered. There's lots of shared soloing on this, so Kearney's guitar doesn't dominate as much as one would expect. The best stuff on here is when he plays solo acoustic, simple and basic, contributing a tossed-off "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at disc's end that may be the best thing on here. ~ Cub Koda

Living Blues (1-2/00, p.102) - "...No matter what interrelated genre Kearney and his versatile band explore, his splendidly fluid bottleneck technique...and sturdy vocals carry the day - and he manages to infuse new life into the old warhorses 'I'm A Man' and 'Roll Over Beethoven'..." Purchase Kerry Kearney CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Alvin Lee In Tennessee CD (2004)
Kerry Kearney album
$14.69 Although technically he never left, Alvin Lee is back. Recorded in 2003 at original Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore's Nashville home studio, with Moore as the mastermind behind the sessions (although due to ear problems he only plays on two tracks), along with Presley's drummer D.J. Fontana on the skins, this would be a listenable effort regardless of who was singing. With ex-Ten Years After's Alvin Lee playing guitar and taking the lead vocals it's a powerfully compelling disc that approximates many of the Sun label greats. Recorded predominantly live in the studio and sounding it, these songs -- mostly originals written expressly for the sessions and an unexpectedly rip-snorting run through of the TYA chestnut "I'm Going Home" -- find Lee at his most enthusiastic. He's clearly having a blast returning to his roots with some of the original architects of the sound backing him up, and that energy jumps out of the grooves. ...

| | Ronnie Earl Healing Time CD (2000)
Kerry Kearney music CDs
$12.89 Not unlike such disparate artists as John Coltrane, John Lennon, or Al Green, Ronnie Earl preaches music's underlying power to cure an ailing soul, and mend a broken heart. On HEALING TIME Earl sets out to encourage us to, as he says, "feel the music, not just be awed by the technique," and the 11 songs included here lead listeners in this direction.
"Churchin'," is an electrifying blues shuffle, while the tunes ...
| | Ellis Hooks Up Your Mind CD (2003)
Kerry Kearney songs
$13.19 Up Your Mind is the American debut by soul-blues singer/songwriter Ellis Hooks. Originally hailing from Mobile, AL, he was an itinerant musician, scrambling and scuffling across the globe, often as a busker. His debut album, Undeniable, garnered a slew of attention on the other side of the Atlantic and has afforded him the notoriety and critical acclaim to play the Montreux Jazz Festival and the esteemed Poretta Festival in Italy. Hooks resides in New York and is remaking music in his own image by using and fusing traditional elements from soul, rock, and the Mississippi Delta played in a direct, gritty manner. Hooks doesn't sift and he doesn't blend, he sculpts and shapes, leaving the rough grain on the surface to admire. Hooks and veteran producer Jon Tiven offer a streetwise, passion-filled toughness in their deep, sensual mix. Hooks has a voice that owes a great debt to Otis Redding first and Wilson Pickett second (who Tiven produced for many years), and an approach in his songwriting ...

| Ellis Hooks Undeniable CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Kerry Kearney album
$18.95 The debut album by Alabama-born soul singer Ellis Hooks is a breath of fresh air on the blues and R&B scenes. For starters, Hooks' songs and sound are entirely unaffected by modern notions of sterility and restraint, or even worse, revivalism. These 13 songs burn with the same fire that the great Southern soul and R&B tracks did from the days of yore -- without sounding like them. With producer Jon Tiven -- who, along with wife Sally, also co-writes with Hooks -- the singer has crafted an entirely upstart outing, one that touches upon Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding, but feels like one of the gritty New York streets Hooks has busked upon. The brokenness and hope that lie in the rough grain of Hooks' voice in "Everything's Falling Around Me" feel as much like a prayer as a wish for transcendence, supported by the biting chunkiness of Sally Tiven's popping bass strut and Jon Tiven's knotty six-string fills. Hooks goes into the groove and lets it cover him; he's singing to the heavens, but also to anyone else who is in earshot and can provide help. At the heart of the shimmering sweet soul in "Blaze ...
| | Fleetwood Mac Show-Biz Blues 1968-1970 Vol. 2 CDs (1998) Remastered
Kerry Kearney CD music
$14.89 Recorded in London, England between 1968 & 1970. Includes liner notes by Martin Clemins.
Live tracks recorded in Boston, Massachusetts and London, England in 1970.
If you think the laid-back L.A. pop of RUMOURS is what Fleetwood Mac is all about, THE VAUDEVILLE YEARS will set you straight. If you're already hip to the band's original incarnation as Britain's finest blues band with guitar wizard Peter Green at its helm, this two-disc collection of previously unreleased tunes from 1968-'70 will be like manna from heaven. Part of the idea of presenting some of these ill-fated sessions here is to paint a picture of what might have been had not ...

Kerry Kearney album
$13.25 If the first volume of Merline Johnson's complete recordings was highly rewarding, volume two is utterly essential, as it contains some of her all-time best, most exciting, and jazz-infused performances. Susceptible listeners may find it difficult to remain seated during "Running Down My Man" (which sounds a lot like one of Washboard Sam's upbeat creations), as a fine trumpeter (possibly Punch Miller) and a tenor saxophonist (probably Bill Owsley) swing like mad atop a well-oiled rhythm section that includes pianist Blind John Davis and electrically amplified guitarist George Barnes. This level of enjoyment is maintained during a kicking cover of Louis Armstrong's "Ol' Man Mose" and a brusque version of "Don't You Leave Me Here," previously recorded by Monette Moore with ...
