Facing East
$10.65 The definition of the term "electro" seems to vary fairly widely, and both general rap fans and students of the form might be at least a little puzzled as to the exact criteria used to select the 27 tracks on this two-CD compilation. It seems more a wide-ranging anthology of 1980s rap in general, albeit with an electro tilt, than one that specifically zeroes in on the electro subgenre, or makes a go at being a definitive electro anthology. If you're willing to let such sticky points slide, however, this is a pretty good collection of early rap, whether firmly considered as part of the electro camp or not. Some big names are here, like Grandmaster Flash (one of whose three tracks, "The Message," is probably the most influential early rap hit of all), Run-D.M.C., Eric B. & Rakim, Kurtis Blow, Just-Ice, and Tone-Loc; there are also noted tracks by artists with less staying power, such as the Treacherous Three's "Whip It." In the tradition of many a compilation from the Union Square group of labels, these are mixed in with items that will be less familiar (and sometimes wholly unfamiliar) to most listeners, like those by Orange Lemon and Rockers Revenge. But while it might not be the most rhyme'n'reasonable sequence of '80s rap, it's a fairly eclectic, quality look at the music as it grew up and incorporated a deepening array of electronic beats and samples. Women aren't ...
| | Kris Delmhorst Strange Conversation CD (2006)
Facing East
$13.89 Released in between the cultivated Songs for a Hurricane disc and the heady sophistication of Shotgun Singer, the music here is more traditional folk / country with the exception of "Light of the Light," "The Drop & the Dream," and "Water, Water," any of which would have fit perfectly on Shotgun Singer. It's an impressive and ambitious work that is evidence of the sophistication enveloping the Kris Delmhorst catalog and one hopes that these important musings get noticed beyond the cult that realizes something very special is happening here. ~ Joe Viglione
Kris Delmhorst's fourth studio release, Strange Conversation (Signature Sounds, June 2006), is a vital and celebratory meditation on art and its ability to speak across time and distance. After several albums of genre-bending original work, Delmhorst found inspiration in the work of various well-known poets. Some of the poems are set verbatim to music, some dismantled and reassembled in significantly new renditions, others merely used as the jumping-off point for Delmhorst's own literate lyrical take. The fact that the album feels modern, cohesive, and joyful is testament both to the inherent timelessness of the poems and to the skillful adaptations that bring them to life as songs - not to mention Delmhorst's wine-deep, honey-bright voice, which can deliver even a centuries-old phrase directly to the doorstep of the listener's soul. The inspiration for the project arrived by chance. In the midst of writing for another record, Delmhorst picked up a poetry anthology sitting on the coffee table and flipped through the pages. "My eye caught the first line of a Robert Browning poem as it flashed by, and the rhythm of the language was so musical that by the time I had paged backwards to find the poem again, a tune already existed in my head," she recalls. A week's worth of unwashed dishes and unanswered phone calls later, most of a new album had emerged. Delmhorst had already written a song based on a Robert Herrick poem a year earlier - a casual writing exercise which turned unexpectedly into a barn-burner of a rock tune - and had filed away a few ideas for other poeticallyinspired songs. Now, as she turned her attention to these stray thoughts, song after song came to life. Lush where it might have been dry, riotous where it could have been reverent, the finished product is anything but academic. Delmhorst releases each poem into the air and gives it the freedom to go where it will, with unexpected results: Walt Whitman's cosmic hurrah becomes a sunny pop anthem, Edna St. Vincent Millay's dreamlike tavern comes to life in a torchy roadhouse waltz, George Eliot's thoughts on the permanence of art slide into ...
