On its full-length debut, North Carolina trio Southern Culture on the Skids develops a high-octane mix of raucous rockabilly, R&B, surf, and punk influences that is unique and wildly exciting. From the most attractive HEE-HAW honey on the front cover-actually bassist/organist Mary Huff-to singer/guitarist Rick Miller's knowing, sly lyrics, DITCH DIGGIN' examines the subtleties of rural Southern culture with such unapologetic anthems as "Too Much Pork For Just One Fork," the delirious "Put Your Teeth Up On The Window Sill," and "My House Has Wheels."
In less skillful hands, these lyrical preoccupations might seem like heavy-handed satire or mean-spirited attacks. But Miller, Huff, and drummer David Hartman, helped by kindred spirit/producer Doug Easley, obviously know and respect the region and its people. The songs are humorous celebrations of, as the brilliant band name suggests, a vanishing culture. More importantly, DITCH DIGGIN' just flat-out smokes.

$12.65 Following the departure of keyboard player Chris Bess, Southern Culture on the Skids have pared themselves back down to a three-piece on their eighth full-length album, Mojo Box. While it's not quite a return to the gloriously greasy stomp of such early classics as For Lovers Only and Ditch Diggin', there is a significantly lower "novelty" ...

$13.45 Even as Real Music kicks up its release schedule to include more Eastern meditation projects, the label has committed to more pop-minded new age artists who beautifully blend relaxing atmospheres with tight, colorful melodies and grooves. Pianist/composer Omar thanks piano legend David Lanz in his liner notes, and like Lanz has done recently, takes a radio-friendly smooth jazz sojourn on many of the tracks here. Every other track alternates between soaring, self-produced atmospheric and exotic pieces and more in-the-pocket rhythmic tunes produced by smooth jazz keyboardist Gregg Karukas (who has also produced Lanz). Working with top outside musicians (from violinist Charlie Bisharat to saxman Eric Marienthal), ...

For the release of its sophomore album, The Picture Plane, Vancouver’s Hinterland has chosen to take matters into its own hands by putting the disc out on its own label, the newly minted Submerged Records. “The extra work is worth it,” says guitarist John Lucas, “because we really believe in this record.” With the new tracks given an extra coat of high-gloss sheen by ace producer Caleb Stull and the band’s songwriting more concise and focused than ever before, The Picture Plane should win Hinterland even more acclaim than that garnered by the group’s debut, Under the Waterline. That disc was released in 2003 by Michigan-based HybridElectric Records. The Georgia Straight, Vancouver’s leading weekly paper, praised the album: “A subtle, shifting wonder, Under the Waterline mixes indelible melodies with soothing layers of ambient guitars to create one of the most richly textured records of the year.” The Straight also named Under the Waterline the best local album in its 2004 Georgia Straight Music Awards, and the Straight’s readers voted Michaela Galloway “best lead singer” and Hinterland “most underrated”. This is music that has inspired critics to use superlatives such as “evocative”, “atmospheric”, and “irresistible”. In Hinterland’s world, the standard ...
